American Idol 8: Episode Seven;
A Long Judge-Insulting Hissy Fit

Recap by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Jacob D.
February 4, 2009
Previously on American Idol, the eighth season kicked into gear and its audition tour went to eight cities. Approximately 150 hopefuls made it to the Hollywood Rounds, which promise to be grueling, weeding out the strong from the less-than-strong. Everyone wants to be a part of the group of 36 that makes up the semi-finals and it all starts here. Let's see what happens.

Over at the Kodak Theatre, 147 folks have filed in to begin their journey through Hollywood Week. Prior to the start of the Hollywood rounds, everyone went through Idol's version of a boot camp, complete with stylists and a crash course with Idol's vocal coaches such as mainstay Debra Byrd. Even Barry Manilow is on hand to give everyone a speech about seizing the moment and making the most of this opportunity.

The first round will be group a capella auditions. In groups of eight, each contestant will get a short time to sing any song they like without musical accompaniment before passing the mic down to the next person. Afterwards, the judges will deliberate, separate people into back and front rows, and deliver the news of who stays and who goes home. Only half of all the auditioners will sing on Day One while the other half goes sight-seeing. However, they still have to sing on Day Two, so I'd be a little wary.

The day begins with a group containing Lil Rounds and Dennis Brigham from the Kansas City auditions. Lil sailed through to Hollywood, but Dennis begged and pleaded for a second chance. Lil nails Whitney Houston's, "I Will Always Love You," and has the judges raving. I have to say, when she sang it, that song wasn't as annoying and overdone as it usually has been. Dennis gives a thin, flimsy performance of, "For Once In My Life," and Simon tears him apart. Lil and four other people I don't recognize are asked to step forward. Among that group is a guy named Alexander. I mention this for no other reason than that I think he's cute. Inevitably, the judges pick the front row to move on and the back row, which includes Dennis, is out. This leads Dennis into a long, judge-insulting hissy fit. Yeah, that's going to change their minds. Considering he barely made it to Hollywood, you'd think he'd be more humble. As he leaves, he sings a line about how America will be mad that Idol cut him. I'm sure a few people, including me, didn't think he should've been there in the first place.
