American Idol: Has Kris Pulled Off The Biggest Upset In Idol History?
Recap by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Jacob D.
May 20, 2009
This week's episode of American Idol brings us the final performance night of the season, the last chance for our final two to plead their cases to America.

Previously, the three remaining contestants all sang their hearts out in an effort to become one of the final two. Danny Gokey was good with, "Dance Little Sister," Kris seemed sheepish with, "Apologize," and Adam belted out, "One." In round two, Danny earned good reviews for, "You Are So Beautiful," Kris stunned many with his take on, "Heartless," and Adam closed the show by tackling Aerosmith's, "Crying." On results night, the Adam/Danny showdown that many had been predicting since week one did not come to fruition as Danny was voted out. Only two remain and one of them will be our newest, "American Idol." Who will it be? What will they sing in order to convince us to vote? Let's find out.

On this final night of performances, Adam and Kris will each be singing three songs. The first round will feature their choices for their own favorite performance of the season. The second round will see them singing songs selected by show creator, Simon Fueller. Finally, they will both sing the victory single, written this year by new Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. Well, she's got to be useful for something right? I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Sort of.

Adam Lambert lost the coin toss and so will be performing first. For his first song, he has chosen, not surprisingly, "Mad World," from the week when the contestants sang songs from their own birth years. Back then, he just sang in a blue spotlight, but with this being finale night, there's lots of smoke and what sounds like a church bell at times. At least, to me. He's slowly wandering the stage in a long black coat, looking all around, and singing sweetly. I don't know. I liked it better the first time when he just let his voice do the talking, as redundant as that sounds. I mean, voice? Talking? Kind of goes without saying, but you know what I mean.

Randy: likes that Adam showed his sensitive side and gives the performance an 'A+'
Kara: says he changed the game for everyone when he first sang this song and rocked it again tonight
Paula: is proud of his journey and thought he did a brilliant job with the song once again
Simon: always felt this was his best performance throughout the season, but thought he was a little too theatrical this time

Kris Allen is second and while you might think he'd choose, "Heartless," since it gave him that extra push last week, but he has selected, "Ain't No Sunshine," for the first round. I think it's a good choice for two reasons: one, this is where people really started to take notice of him and two, the novelty might wear off if he performed the same song in back-to-back weeks. Kris is in fine form and sounds great. I feel he drags out the song a little too much in portions, but it's an overall strong performance.

Randy: likes that he knows what kind of artist Kris will be, felt that was one of his best performances of the season
Kara: says Kris moves people and thinks that's an incredible skill
Paula: likes how he puts his own stamp on every song he performs
Simon: wasn't sure at first if America made the right choice putting Kris into the finale, but changed his mind after that performance

Ryan asks Simon, "Who wins round one?" Simon answers, "Kris." Point for Kris, I guess.

It's time for round two.....
