American Idol 8: The Dark Horse Triumphs Over The Dark Prince

Tonight, the latest American Idol will be crowned! During what I’m sure will be an excruciating amount of show filler, ‘special’ performances, and general time wasting, there will also be the ever important three minutes of results.
Last night, my DVR got me back for all of the abuse and overuse I give it and decided to take the night off. It didn’t record Idol (or anything else last night for that matter). I did cave in and downloaded the videos (at $1.50 each) on iTunes today and watched the clips that were available on Fox’s website. From what I was able to see, here’s how the night went down:
Round 1 – Artist’s Choice
Adam – “Mad World”
Kris – “Ain’t No Sunshine when She’s Gone”
I give round one to Kris. The judges praised both of course, but Simon said Kris won the round.
Round 2 – Producer’s (Simon Fuller) Choice
Adam – “A Change is Gonna Come”
Kris – “What’s Going On”
For this one, I have to give the round to Adam, and the judges agreed. Kris was good, but Adam was better.
Round 3 – Winner’s Single (cowritten by Kara), “No Boundaries”
It was a really odd song, and I don’t think either one of them sounded very good singing it. It was a bad way to end the show, and a bad last impression to have. After the two performances, the judges pretty much declared Adam as the winner. Simon even called him a “worldwide star.”
Performances aside, I have to say that I genuinely don’t think it matters how either of them sung last night. I think the voters’ minds have been made up for quite some time, and they were going to vote for their favorites, regardless of how they sung. I still say that Kris could win this, especially if some amount of Danny’s supporters vote for him. But as we’ve seen in the past, many times the person who comes in second actually turns out to be more successful than the winner.
Tonight’s finale begins with Ryan telling us that over 100 million votes were received last night.
As each judge is introduced, we see a silly little clip. For Randy, looking dapper in a tux with a dark red bowtie, we see a montage of him saying “for me, for you.” For Kara, who is wearing a black strapless number, we get her saying “honey” and “sweetie” over and over. Paula, wearing a glittery strapless flesh colored dress, is shown using all sorts of long and sometimes incomprehensible verbiage. Last but not least, Simon is wearing a white tuxedo shirt with a few too many buttons undone, a black jacket, and his clip is of him saying things like “pardon,” and “what?”
Next, Adam and Kris come down the stairs, wearing ridiculously matching white outfits. Adam is wearing a tight white leather jacket and tight zippered white pants. Kris is wearing much more subdued white pants and a white button down shirt. They talk about how they’re feeling, but there’s something wrong with the microphone so we can’t really hear them.
Just when we thought.....
