America's Next Top Model: Teyona Had An Amazing Performance
Rankings by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Jacob D.
May 14, 2009
This season of America's Next Top Model brought us 13 new girls, but as always, only one could win. Here are the girls who were eliminated along the way and why:

Isabella- had a disastrous performance at the first photo shoot

Jessica- her beauty wasn't translating to her photos

Nijah- couldn't bring energy to her photos

Kortnie- didn't make enough of an impact as a model

Sandra- was eliminated after weeks of underwhelming performances and three trips to the bottom two

Tahlia- her lack of confidence ultimately got in the way

London- had a disproportionate figure and unflattering photos

Natalie- couldn't bring variety to her photos

Fo- couldn't compensate for her lack of height

Celia- couldn't compensate for her age

This left a final three of Allison, Aminat, and Teyona. Aminat was eliminated in third place after the usual CoverGirl assignments, leaving Allison and Teyona to battle it out on a Brazilian runway. Though Allison had an interesting look and showed much progress, Teyona was deemed the winner for her consistently strong performance throughout the season.

So now that this season has drawn to a close, how does it stack up amongst all the rest? Honestly, I'd have to say this was the worst season yet. Very few of the girls really showed high-fashion appeal, great potential, or even good photos. There were a lot of sub-par performances, missed potential, and frustrating moments. My two least favorite girls were Sandra and Natalie. Sandra was definitely the villain, one who spoke highly of herself and nastily belittled all the other girls despite her own poor track record. Natalie was dull and snobby. None of her photos or challenge performances were really interesting, yet she was over-praised at times.

The first four girls to be eliminated, though nice, were just mediocre. Tahlia, for her all her initial brave talk about being a role model for burn victims, floundered badly and almost became annoying. I don't think she was really ready for such a venture at this time and should've waited a little longer. I feel like London got a raw deal as we saw Mr. Jay complimenting her at photo shoots, yet she mostly had unflattering photos picked at panel towards the end of her run. Fo was interesting, but she was a bit of a baby at times. Even Aminat and Allison, both of whom made the final three, had very uneven performances, often coming up short in the photo shoots and challenges despite the praise that was heaped upon them.

Aside from the girls, this whole season was just incredibly underwhelming. Most of the photo shoots just didn't work as well as the producers hoped, starting with the Ellis Island Immigrants shoot in Week Four. I can't really remember getting excited about any of the challenges and the trip to Brazil was a bit of a bust.

For me, there were a few bright spots. Teyona had an amazing performance all throughout the season. However, my favorite girl was Celia, even with that whole fiasco following Kortnie's elimination. She was breezy, sunshiney, had an interesting look, and a strong performance. She was charming in an actress-y way, doing very well in a number of the challenges and generally carrying herself in an elegant manner. She understood fashion, having lived and breathed it for years, and it showed in how well she adapted to the competition and especially in her amazing outfits. She had, arguably, the best personal styling of any Top Model contestant in the show's history. Despite her own admission that the photo shoots were her weakest area, I thought she had a number of strong photos, starting right at the beginning with her hula hoop shot in the 'Childhood Games' shoot. Celia was just my favorite part of the season.

I also really liked the powdered beauty shots and exotic birds photo shoots. Both of them produced some of the strongest photos of the whole season. I also liked how the final assignments turned out. Those CoverGirl photos were wonderful and Allison and Teyona both did a good job on the runway.

However, those few bright spots cannot out-weigh all the negatives and this season has mostly just given me a better appreciation of past seasons. At least Cycles Four, Seven, and Nine, the ones I had previously felt were the worst, had more interesting girls, better photo shoots, and stronger portfolios. I am really looking forward to Cycle 13 and hoping it's better. I'd hate to see how it could get worse. See ya there.

Teyona
Winner of 'ANTM Cycle 12'
In the beginning, I was worried that Teyona would have a hard time softening up her harsh look and appearing versatile. Turns out, she was the one girl this season who really did show versatility! She always looked amazing in her pictures, soft or strong, and never once stepped wrong. Okay, her New York Sight-seeing photo was her weakest, but it still wasn't bad.

She showed great consistency throughout the competition and won the judges praise, earning a ringing endorsement from Tyra on a couple occasions and being called first at three different judging panels. Besides being called first, she was one of the first three girls called in all, but one judging panel and didn't appear in the bottom two until the last possible moment.

Though she had personality and drive, she faltered on the commercial assignments and it almost cost her the competition. However, she had performed too strongly overall to be denied the win.

Congratulations, Teyona! You are America's Next Top Model.
