After waiting for what seemed like forever in reality TV terms, but was only just two months in real life, the tenth season of 'America's Next Top Model,' the smash "dramality" show, premiered this week! You're familiar with the concept: the brainchild of top supermodel Tyra Banks, this is a reality show aiming to find the next top American fashion model by putting groups of girls through photo shoots, commercial projects, runway shows, and drama. We're ten seasons in so it has obviously worked out well for all involved, but what can we expect in cycle ten? Let's find out by checking the semi-final episode!
After clips of ANTM's most infamous moments, we the 35 semi-finalists arrive in New York via a big yellow bus. Marguerite, a 19 year old from Cincinnati, is having fun and bonding with all the other girls. Marvita, whom was rejected in last season's semi-final round, is happy to be back. She figures she wasn't ready last time because she was still holding on to so much personal baggage.
The school bus takes to the girls to a big, fancy-schmancy building where they are greeted in the courtyard by the two Jays. 24 year old Jennifer from Orlando exclaims that Miss J is fabulous and Mr. Jay is so fine. In past semi-final episodes, the prospective contestants have endured a Top Model boot camp and gone to the Caribbean, but this season they will be attending a Top Model Prep School. The girls are sent to the locker rooms to change into their school uniforms. Then, they are taken in for their photo I.D. fashion shoots. Amy, who is known as Amis on the CW's website for some reason, says people think she is weird and wonders why she's even here because the other girls are so pretty.
Getting to this preliminary shoot, Katarzyna, who looks stunning by the way, says she has an edge over the other girls because she's attended an Ivy League school. Marvita, who shows an interesting contrast between her rough look and the preppy style of the uniform, says she has been working on herself and taking therapy. Well, it worked for Tiffany in cycle four and worked to splendid effect for Jaslene in cycle eight, so more power to you Marvita. We see Claire and we also see that half of her head is shaved, while Lauren tells us she is a punk artist and went against modeling even though people have urged her to try out. Allison tells us she is here to annihilate the other girls and calls herself a silent predator. At least she didn't say she's "Silent, but deadly" like that one mom-and-daughter duo did on "Crowned."
Jenna looks fierce in her shoot, but has a sex kitten vibe and Kristen looks clueless. Fatima, who I notice for the first time has a striking Iman quality about her, tells us she is originally from Somalia, but sometimes feel like an outsider in the African-American community. Dominique reminds me a lot of a perkier version of cycle five's Coryn, which is a good thing because Coryn is my all-time favorite ANTM contestant. Mr. Jay is impressed that she knows her angles. Kim, a.k.a. Kimberly on the CW's website, looks like a total Barbie and comes off as completely clueless, whereas Kristen from earlier just looked it in her photo. After the shoot, Miss J takes the girls for preliminary lessons in runway walking, but of course not everyone their walk down just yet. Later, they go to a football field at night where past ANTM contestants Amanda, Michelle, Joanie, Furonda, and Jael pose as cheerleaders while Mr. Jay announces who the Homecoming Queen is.
