At the beginning of this week’s episode of “America’s Next Top Model,” the models gather in the kitchen at the beginning of their day. Samantha prepares what is quite possibly the world’s smallest pancake before opening up about her family. She reveals that that her father is really strict which causes Elina to also open up and admit that her mother is very controlling. Elina says that because her mother controlled everything most of her life, Elina now has a hard time letting go over things she herself has taken control of. Elina reveals that she lived in the Ukraine until she was 8 and moved to the United States and because of her Russian heritage, she has a difficult time revealing her emotions.
In the bedroom, Lauren Brie shares with Marjorie that she feels she will go home this week. Marjorie calms her fears and tells her that she’s too versatile to go home. Meanwhile, in an interview Sheena states that she feels that Lauren Brie is very smart but “not an exciting girl.”
Lauren Brie, Elina, and Marjorie lay in the hot L.A. sun in their backyard and Elina’s tattoo on her stomach , “a voice for those who can’t speak,” is showcased. The topic of discussion is whether Analeigh will remain in the competition to go abroad. Lauren Brie and Elina don’t believe she will. Analeigh then joins the girls and fully clad in a hoodie and sweats, she lays in the sun next to them. While sucking on a lollipop Analeigh asks, “Does anyone here see me as competition?” Elina tells Analeigh that while she thinks she’s beautiful, she doesn’t look like a model. In her interview, Analeigh expresses her frustration over how McKey and Elina have such strong looks, how Marjorie is a natural as a model, and how Lauren Brie takes amazing photographs. She then wonders aloud, “Where’s my niche?”
The next morning, the models are driven to a location without so much as a clue to why. Their minibus pulls up to a large building and the girls sheepishly enter the dressing room of a photo studio where they discover their Tyra Mail on the coffee table. When they open the envelope, they discover a photo of Tyra in a postal worker’s uniform but no text of any kind. Just then, Tyra opens the door, enters wearing the same postal worker’s uniform in the photograph and excitedly announces, “Tyra Mail!” She then recites the clue for this challenge, “Neither rain, nor sleet, nor my achy, achy feet will keep you from your Tyra mail this week! It’s time you learn your signature style so you’ll be a fierce top model, chiiild. I’ll show you my tricks, but let’s be frank, you’ll be thankin’ Miss Tyra when you’re makin’ big bank.” Tyra exits the room and the girls read another note for them that instructs them to change out of their clothes and into the black dresses and heels provided.
Once they’ve changed, the models enter the studio and come upon Tyra herself in the midst of a shoot. She welcomes the girls and tells them that today they’ll be learning about signature poses. She explains that while supermodel Gisele Bundchen is known for her back, she herself was known for the intensity she could give with her eyes. Tyra explains to the girls that today they’ll have 20 pictures taken of themselves by photographer Mike Rosenthal while she coaches, and then they’ll be given the opportunity to see the photographs afterward. She goes on to say that once she’s given her critique, they’ll do 20 more shots to try and improve upon the first set.
Analeigh is the first of the models to be photographed and when Tyra asks her what her signature pose is, Analeigh says she supposes that it’s her ice skating form. When her 20 frames are complete, Tyra tells Analeigh she does the same thing over and over again and on her second shoot, she instructs Analeigh’s signature style reflect a rebel ice skater instead. Tyra isn’t moved by her performance and announces to the camera, “I give her a 7.”
McKey, however, does impress Tyra and after her first photographs with her over the shoulder look, and Tyra suggests McKey further exhibit the curve of the neck. After McKey is Samantha who believes her signature style is her hands. As Samantha clenches her hands and tries to showcase them in the air, we learn from Elina that she doesn’t think Sam is strong enough. Tyra also doesn’t find Samantha particularly strong and tells her to try thinking of her hands as an extension of herself and not merely the only part of herself.
When it’s Lauren Brie’s turn and she’s asked what her signature poses is he replies, “I don’t know, it’s just me. It’s something I do. Just awkward.” Tyra tells her they’ll work on her trademark later. Sheena remarks in an interview that Lauren Brie’s personality is like the color of her hair: translucent. Tyra then tells Lauren Brie that she believes her signature poses to be that of a surfer girl. Lauren Brie does her best to pose as the sea fairing athlete but it simply falls flat. In an interview, she looks at the camera with tears in her eyes and sniffles as she says, “I guess I just need to show more of a personality. I’m going home if I don’t step it up.”
When Sheena steps in front of the camera, she proclaims her signature pose to be, “Divaesque. Not hoochie.” After looking at her 20 photographs, Tyra believes Sheena’s signature pose to be “cultural dance.” After Sheena has danced her way through her pictures, Joslyn steps forward and says her signature pose is to just “pose wide.” The girls waiting in the wings giggle at hearing it. For her remaining 20 shots, Tyra wants Joslyn to work her profile as she believes this is Joslyn’s strength.
Elina’s signature is immediately proclaimed “top model of the world” and after her first photographs, Tyra helps Elina try to take her poses from catalog to editorial. After Elina, the background accordion music begins to play which signifies it’s Madame Marjorie’s turn to pose. Her signature is the “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” As she hunches over on set, Tyra takes on a French accent as she coaches her: “So sad. He’s in there. The bells are ringing. Bong. Bong. Bong.” After looking at her photographs, Tyra tells her she took her signature much too literal and Marjorie must now make it more “model-y.” As Marjorie models the second time, Tyra shouts out in approval and in her interview reveals that Marjorie took all of her awkwardness and made it into something beautiful.
When the photographer has finished with the models, they stand together before Tyra and she reveals to the girls that today’s session with her was actually a challenge and the winner of the challenge will receive diamonds for her and a friend. She then proclaims Marjorie the winner. “You were so amazing! So strong!” Marjorie shares her prize with Analeigh and Lauren Brie says in an interview that Analeigh and Marjorie are such close friends, they’re like a couple.
At the jewelry store Rafinity, owner Ann Mangini warmly welcomes Marjorie and Analeigh. She tells them that they’ll each be able to choose one piece of golden diamond jewelry for themselves. Both girls drape themselves in diamonds and excitedly ask Ann, “How much is that?” In an interview, Analeigh reveals that her and Marjorie are probably the two girls in the house that are the least interested in jewelry. Each of them decides on a necklace to keep as their prize, with Marjorie selecting a diamond square and Analeigh choosing a peace sign.
Back at the house, the girls gather together in their pajamas for their latest installment of Tyra Mail: “You better bring it or you’re never going to work in this town again, Love Tyra.” Appearing on the TV screen after Tyra Mail is Samantha’s winning photo from the previous week. As she glances at the image of herself, she states that she does not want to disappoint Tyra.
The models arrive in downtown Los Angeles at the Orpheum theatre for their next photoshoot. As they march into the venue, the marquee above the entrance reads, “Night at the firercees.” The girls gather in the theatre’s seats and a voice announces, “Welcome to the 11th cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Please give a warm welcome to your host Jay Manuel.” As the girls scream and clap, Jay appears on stage dressed to the nines. He welcomes the girls to the theatre and explains that today’s shoot takes place in the theatre and each girl will act out the embarrassing moments from award shows that aren’t shown on television.
Marjorie is first to shoot with photographer Mike Rosenthal and Jay asks her what her signature pose was from the earlier challenge. Marjorie tells him about the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Jay nods approvingly. “I definitely want you to use that,” he says, and then adds, “While you’re on the toilet.” Marjorie must portray a starlet at a red carpet event who is unable to use the restroom due to the constrictiveness of her gown. On set, she stands awkwardly over the white porcelain while the photographer snaps and Jay laughs from behind the monitor. When she flushes the toilet with her designer heel, Marjorie breaks into a fit of laughs. Coming off set, Jay meets her with a smile and tells her she, “turned it out today, mama. I can clearly tell what you’re doing. You gotta go pee.”
Samantha’s photoshoot must portray her as celebrity at an award show who cannot read her cue cards. She tries to work in her signature pose by using her hands but Jay tells her it comes off as forced and fake. When she finishes, he tells her that she has several good shots but for the most part, her photographs are much too dramatic.
“The overemotional actress who can’t stop crying,” themed photoshoot is assigned most fittingly to Elina. She appears on set with a fake tear in place but Jay tells her to try and let go of her emotions. She begins the shoot and immediately Jay tells her it’s much too posed. He then tells her she needs to get to a place where she doesn’t feel “good enough” and wants her to talk to him while Mike photographs. “Where do you not feel good enough,” he says from behind the monitor. Standing at the podium in a glamorous gown and make-up, she begins to break. “I don’t trust myself,” she says softly. Jay begins again, “In whose eyes are you afraid of disappointing?” Gripping onto the podium, she turns her tear filled eyes to the camera and says, “Myself.” The tears carry on into her interview where she says, “I’m tired of not letting it out. Because I know it’s something I have to get through to be successful.” Jay tells her it’s the best she’s looked so far in the competition and the two embrace before she leaves the set.
Lauren Brie’s task for her photoshoot is to trip up the stairs on the way to accepting her award. She explains to Jay that her signature move was to be like a surfer girl to which Jay believes will work well for her photograph. But as she begins to pose on the stairs, the photographer stops her to tell her it’s looking much too forced. Jay tries coaching her through the process but Lauren Brie continues to fall flat.
McKey must portray a starlet who believes she’s going to win the award but doesn’t. She clutches the hand of a male model as she’s awaiting her name to be called and then feigns her utter disappointment when she isn’t chosen.
“Starlet steps on her gown” is the embarrassing moment that Sheena must portray for her photoshoot but Jay is more embarrassed at Sheena’s performance. He finds her completely unbelievable as she turns looking aghast to see who has stepped upon her dress.
Joslyn and Lauren Brie are shown walking toward the set dressed alike and it’s obvious that Joslyn’s shoot will portray the shock an actress feels showing up to an award show and seeing another award show attendee in the same gown. During the shoot, Joslyn tosses her hair over her shoulder in disgust at the sight and the photographer corrects her. “Remember, not bitchy. You’re surprised.” She then asks if she can use her signature pose using her profile and Jay not only agrees but approves.
Last to set is Analeigh who must portray an interviewer with an attitude. In her midnight sequin gown, she stands with a microphone in front of a male model in a tuxedo and looks annoyed. Jay asks her to try and mock the person in which she’s speaking to and turning one shoulder, she rolls her eyes looking very, very bored and the photographer snaps while Jay proclaims, “yes!” In her interview, Analeigh smiles and says she feels like she’s improving. “This was awesome,” she declares.
Back at the house, the girls gather for Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only seven will continue on in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model.” When the girls are finished reading, Samantha screams, “Lucky seven!” and the models clap.
“And then there were eight,” Tyra says to kick off panel. She introduces the judges, of which includes photographer of the challenge, Mike Rosenthal.
McKey is judged first and her photo of an actress who thought she was going to win an award but didn’t is intense. Paulina proclaims “beautiful!” the second it is revealed on screen. Nigel agrees and says it’s the best picture he’s ever seen of McKey. Up next is Sheena and her photo of someone stepping on her dress doesn’t go over quite as well. The panel feels it looks too much as it would in real life and though she’s been stepped on, it didn’t “step” it up enough.
Analeigh’s photo as the annoyed red carpet reporter is met with laughs and approval while Samantha’s photo of trying to read cue cards while being blinded by the light is met with anything but. “You seem like you might sneeze,” Paulina tells her. “I’m not getting what you meant to tell me.”
Joslyn steps forward with her trademark smile and tells the panel that in her picture, “some gal had the nerve to show up with my gown on.” Tyra proclaims it to be the best photograph of Joslyn’s through the entire competition. Joslyn cries when complimented on her profile in the photograph. She had always felt her nose was far too big and Tyra comforts her and says that every model has a part of their body that they are insecure about.
Challenge winner Marjorie’s photograph as someone needing to use the toilet but can’t get out of their dress is somehow stunning despite its subject. She is complimented by Nigel and Tyra and even the photographer who was amazed she could keep her mouth so relaxed while being in a very awkward position. Lauren Brie is less amazing, however, and the judges find her photo of her tripping upstairs unbelievable. When asked if she relied on her hair and make-up to play the part for her, she shrugs and tells them she doesn’t know.
Elina’s photo is last to be revealed and the emotions she displayed on set aren’t as clear in her photograph. While she was to portray an overemotional actress, Tyra says if her photo was re-touched without the tears, it wouldn’t seem she was crying at all. Hearing this starts Elina crying and her voice breaks as she says, “I let go there and if that’s not enough, I don’t know.”
The judges deliberate on who the remaining seven models will be. Tyra announces that the best photo of the week is awarded to Marjorie. Analeigh, McKey, Samantha, Elina, and Joslyn also all receive their photographs.
Lauren Brie and Sheena are the last two girls to be called and they step forward toward Tyra. Tyra says the two girls are opposites and that Lauren Brie’s “alien-esque beauty” shines but her personality does not, while Sheena isn’t the most “mode-esque” her personality gleams. She then pulls out Sheena’s photograph and says that personality is a bit brighter this week and Sheena is overcome with joy.
Lauren Brie steps forward tearfully to say goodbye to Tyra. Tyra asks Lauren Brie why she thinks she’s going home and she replies that it’s because the panel wasn’t able to see her personality but her friends at home know she’s a great person. Tyra corrects her and says it’s not about relating to your inner circle of friends but rather to the entire public. Unable to even relate to the girls in the house, Lauren Brie waves goodbye to them from afar, wishes them luck, and walks off set to pack her suitcase for home.
Next week on America’s Next Top Model, the seven remaining girls stumble and stutter through a make-up commercial, but have no trouble finding the words to argue with one another at home.
