America's Next Top Model: Prostitutes Can't Be Too Feminine
Recap by Jessi K.
October 30, 2008
The models return home from panel chanting, “Amsterdam, Amsterdam!” They pack their bags for Holland and Elina reflects on being the bottom two while McKey reveals that herself, Samantha, and Sheena would have preferred Joslyn to stay over Elina. McKey also says that she is focused on having this week’s number one photo while Samantha is just excited at the opportunity to be in Amsterdam, “See ya later, California!” she squeals while waving goodbye to the camera.

At the airport in Amsterdam, the girls are greeted by Daphne Deckers, host of Holland’s Next Top Model. She asks the girls to pair up since they’ll be working together to find their way around Amsterdam in order to find their home for the duration of their stay there. Whichever team finds their residence in the city first, will share 50 extra frames at the next photo shoot. The teams are Analeigh and Marjorie, McKey and Sheena, and Elina and Samantha. Samantha isn’t sure why Elina chose her but as soon as they win she says, “Elina can go back to hating me.”

The first task for the models in Holland is to buy a train ticket to Amsterdam Central from the airport. McKey and Sheena as well as Elina and Samantha make it onto the first train but Analeigh and Marjorie miss it due to having tried to buy tickets using American money. They then exchanged money but it caused them to be late to the platform. On the train, Sheena is enamored with the city as she watches it pass by the window: “I’m thinking Amsterdam is going to be like grimy and dirty and like—weed and sex and alcohol but it’s so gorgeous.”

Once off the train, the girls have to find any public phone for further instructions. Samantha and Elina find one first and are told to locate Dam Square within the city. McKey and Sheena and Samantha and Elina ask locals for help and end up arriving at the location at the same time.

Their fourth task is to find a pay phone and call to get the address of their house. As Elina and Sam are on the phone calling for their address, Marjorie and Analeigh arrive and all the teams have caught up. The voice on the phone gives all the girls the address and their last task is to take a cab to the house. Each of the teams run for a cab. And just as Analeigh and Marjorie’s car pulls up to their home, they see Elina and Samantha arrive to the house first where Daphne Decker is waiting on the front stoop to give them their keys. Inside, Elina and Samantha run around excitedly looking at their new surroundings and hug one another on their win. In her interview Samantha says she doesn’t know quite how it happened, but while working together, her and Elina bonded.

Outside, McKey and Sheena arrive to the house and wave their arms excitedly at Daphne believing they are first to arrive only to be told by her that they are actually the last. They enter their house a bit disappointed but glad to be home. Waiting for them inside in a pair of wooden shoes is their first international Tyra mail: “People used to come to play but fashion makes it hot today. Love, Tyra.”

The girls settle in to their house and while Samantha, McKey and Sheena try to sleep, Elina, Analeigh and Marjorie take a bath together which keeps the rest of the girls awake. In her interview McKey says, “I feel so frustrated with the vajayjay shaving party. If Sheena or Sam goes home, I’m going to die because the other three I just don’t relate with.”

The next morning over breakfast, Elina speaks about how she already feels at home in Amsterdam and wants to move there. To her, the house reminds her of the Ukraine and it brings back memories for her. McKey can’t hide her annoyance and says in an interview, “If you want to stay here, then why don’t you go for Holland’s Next Top Model?”

As the girls walk to their challenge in the red light district, scantily clad women can be seen in the windows they walk by. Sheena begins to wonder about the task from what she’s seeing: “We about to get grimy and dirty and controversial or something because as soon as we walk in the alleyway, I’m seeing half naked women in the window. I’m like, ‘what are they going to have me do?’” J. Alexander meets the models and explains that the red light district is famous for its legalized prostitution but that there is also a project there called Redlight Fashion Amsterdam that is trying to change that area’s image. The project is the brainchild of several fashion designers who want to change the brothels into fashion design showrooms. One of the co-founders is designer Carlos Wijnands and he’ll be judging with J. as the girls showcase some of Amsterdam’s most famous designers’ clothing in the windows of the red light district.

The girls are split into teams of McKey and Samantha, Sheena and Marjorie, and Elina and Analeigh. Each team meets with a designer who fits the girls with their clothing. Elina and Analeigh step into the windows first. They are fitted in large white, fluffy gowns and as they begin to pose, Analeigh gets caught in the window’s decorations. From below, the designer watches with J. and Carlos and J. comments on how well Elina is doing with the challenge. McKey and Samantha take their place next and the designer had asked them to look like dolls so they begin to pose with open mouths and dreamy eyes. J. loves the clothes on the girls and the designer loves the girls. J. comments on how well McKey and Samantha are working together. Sheena and Marjorie are last. Their windows are loud and bursting with color. The designer had wanted them to look “freaky” and their make-up is heavy and dark and their movements were to be expressive and strange. Marjorie embodies this during the challenge but the judges feel Sheena is much too feminine.

After the challenge, the girls stand before Mariette Hoitink from Redlight Fashion Amsterdam, who announces that the winners of this challenge will be flown back for Amsterdam International Fashion Week to walk in several designers’ shows. J. critiques each pair and tells Marjorie that she was fantastic but Sheena looked too much at home: “You look like you belong in that window,” he tells her. Sam and McKey worked well together, he says and while Elina was perfectly controlled, Analeigh was too caught up in decorations to show off the garment properly. He then announces the winners of the challenge to be Samantha and McKey. They jump up and down and scream with joy at their win.

The girls arrive home to find.....
