America's Next Top Model: It's So Hard to Have A Personality
Recap by Jessi K.
November 13, 2008
The models return home from panel and Samantha runs into the house to see her photo being showcased in the living room. In the kitchen, the girls gather together to have tea and Marjorie is feeling really down after being in the bottom two in the previous panel. Samantha tells her that she had predicted that she and Elina would be in the bottom two after the go-sees. Marjorie says she’s trying to remain calm instead of “freaking out like usual.” The girls then receive “Tyra post” which reads, “A model knows how to sell makes the most sense, Love, Tyra.” Confusion abounds as the girls try to decipher Tyra’s message. “Dude, what does that mean?” says Samantha.

Marjorie is still feeling badly after panel and her and Analeigh talk in the bedroom about how Marjorie is feeling. Marjorie doesn’t like that panel see her as fragile or week and she’s struggling with how to show her personality without showing her nerves. “I need to be at least a little nervous to be someone interesting,” she says.

The next morning, the models arrive at a building in Amsterdam and are greeted by Paulina Porizkova. She tells them she’s there to work with them about how to sell an emotion in a photograph using their senses. Before her are various tables full of objects like herring, toilet paper, cell phones, etc. The girls begin to smell the herring and fake a delightful expression. Looking at the fish, Samantha wonders to herself, “Um, is this sanitary?” The girls then move on to the toilet paper and Paulina asks Marjorie to pretend it’s as rough as newspaper while McKey must treat it as a teddy bear. In an interview, Paulina comments on each of the girls’ performances and says that everything McKey did was “model-like,” while Marjorie had such believability. She felt Analeigh was very natural, but that she often forgot that she was supposed to be aware of the camera even if there wasn’t one in the room and last, Paulina felt that Samantha was very playful like a “clown” and that she was able to find the happiness in everything she had to sell.

Back at home, the girls receive more Tyra mail: “Your delivery better be on the Mark, Love Tyra.” They speculate that the challenge will be a commercial using the skills Paulina taught them earlier in the day. In the bedroom, Samantha and McKey talk about how badly they want to continue on in the competition and how much of themselves they’ve given to it.

The girls arrive at the ad agency Amsterdam Worldwide for their challenge and they are met by Paulina Porizkova and the agency’s Executive Director Richard Gorodecky. The girls learn that for their challenge, they’ll be auditioning for a 30 second commercial for a jogging shoe. The commercial has no speaking parts but in it, they’ll be jogging past a taxi when they catch the eye of male model Mark Vanderloo, who will get out of the cab and kiss them. The winner of the challenge will receive a $10,000 shopping spree to Dutch clothing company G-Star.

Before the audition, the girls start to get nervous for their screen kiss. Samantha is first to audition and Richard and Paulina watch as Samantha jogs on a treadmill before jumping off to kiss Mark. They tell her she did quite well and she makes a fist pump while shouting, “Yes!” They ask Mark how Samantha did and he replies that she was “quite convincing.” Analeigh is next to audition and she playfully tosses her hair while jogging to catch Mark’s eye. Her audition also goes well and afterward she giggles and says, “I enjoyed it rather a lot.” McKey follows Analeigh and her audition isn’t quite as smooth as both Samantha and Analeigh. When she leaves the room, Richard says, “it ain’t easy,” and Paulina agrees. Marjorie is last to audition and approaches the challenge as a bit of fun to not get so nervous. Both Richard and Paulina remark that her audition wasn’t quite what they were expecting but found it to be a pleasant surprise.

The girls return to the audition room and Paulina, Richard, and Mark are there to give them their critiques. The judges felt Samantha was adorable, but went a bit overboard with the character for their taste and that Analeigh was cute and sweet and did a great job. McKey is deemed awkward while Marjorie’s awkwardness is what won them over. They felt her performance was the most honest and she is awarded the winner of the challenge. She chooses Analeigh to share in the prize with her and they split the $10,000 evenly at G-Star and shop until their hearts content.

Back at the house, the girls receive yet another Tyra mail. “Tomorrow you’ll be going Dutch but you’re going to have to give 100%.” They try to speculate on what “going Dutch” means but no one is sure. None of them ponder too long as Marjorie calls the boys who drove them to their go-sees during the previous challenge and invites them to the house. They arrive with pizza and alcohol. None of the girls drink except for Marjorie and as the night goes on, she begins to get tipsier. The group plays charades together but then after awhile, it turns into truth or dare. Marjorie is dared to kiss one of the guys at the house for ten seconds. She gladly accepts the challenge and the kiss lasts above and beyond the specified time limit.

The party continues.....
