America's Next Top Model: "To Feel This Proud Of Myself Is Amazing"
Finale Recap by Jessi K.
November 20, 2008
While in their flat, the girls receive Tyra mail but its message isn’t quite clear as it’s written in Dutch. The girls determine it means “easy, breezy, beautiful,” and that they’ll be shooting a CoverGirl commercial. They then find lines they’ll need to memorize both in English and Dutch for it.

When the final three arrive at the shoot, they’re greeted by Jay Manuel who confirms that they will be shooting a commercial for CoverGirl Cosmetics and whoever wins America’s Next Top model will win a national CoverGirl ad to be featured in Times Square that will also be plastered at Wal-Mart stores all across the country. “Can you imagine that kind of exposure?” he says to McKey, Samantha, and Analeigh standing across from him. Just then Whitney, America’s Next Top Model Cycle 10 Winner appears next to him and she tells the girls that the commercial they’ll be shooting will be for Amazement Lip Gloss and not only will they have to have their lines memorized, but they’ll each have to kiss a male actor at the end of the commercial.

Backstage in hair and make-up, Analeigh rehearses her lines with Sutan the make-up artist and already she’s fumbling. She says she was unable to sleep all evening running the lines through her head but the second she arrived in hair and make-up, they have completely left her mind.

The theme for the CoverGirl commercial is three friends on vacation who happen to spot a rather attractive male and a friendly chat with him leads to a kiss. Samantha is first to shoot her scenes and closely watching her are Jay Manuel and CoverGirl representative Elyssa Traub. Standing nervously in front of the camera, Samantha begins to deliver her lines and her eyes look away from the camera in search of the words. Jay directs her to try again and to only look at the camera. In an interview, Jay reveals that while Sam always brings energy to a set, she appeared to be holding something back during this particular shoot.

McKey follows Samantha and immediately stumbles over her lines and puts her face into her hands in embarrassment. “Sorry,” she says softly while trying to get her confidence back. We’re then treated to a flashback from panel at week seven as Tyra tells McKey that while she’s able to deliver a photograph, she’s not able to deliver her lines. In an interview, McKey says the previous commercial shoot disaster was adding to her nervousness for the CoverGirl commercial. After take three, McKey is able to collect herself and improves with each following take.

Last on set is Analeigh. She says the words, “take one” and freezes. None of the lines are coming to her and she is visibly upset wiping away tears. She struggles through her words take after take and Jay then feeds her the lines in order to make it through. When the male actor arrives for the kissing scene, Analeigh waits for the director to yell action, but the actor leans straight in for the kiss as she’s standing there. She laughs and says she was thinking, “Well, I guess that awkwardness is over!”

The girls return to hair and make-up for the CoverGirl ad photo shoot. Jay introduces them to Jim De Yonker, the photographer of their shoot. Jay tells them they will not have his direction for this shoot but will be left in good hands with Jim. The girls shoot their photographs in the same order they shot their commercials and as we see them each smiling sweetly for the camera, Jim critiques each one. He says that Samantha needs to be more clever and imaginative with how she presents herself on camera, that Analeigh knows how to pose, and that McKey gave him lots of variety to work with.

Back at home, the girls receive their final Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only two will continue on in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model. Love, Tyra.” Passing Analeigh’s winning photo from last week, the models walk up the stairs to bed. Analeigh seems the most troubled as she tosses and turns amongst her sheets. She reveals how nervous she is about meeting with panel, “I have the chance of making it in the top two, I have the chance of winning. But when you want something this badly, it’s so painful to know that it just could be over so fast.”

Samantha, Analeigh, and McKey arrive at panel and Tyra greets them. Their guest judge today is fashion designer Addy Van Den Krommenacker, whose fashion show will feature the final two. The panel then watches the models’ CoverGirl commercial and each of the three girls’ best bits are edited together. Samantha steps forward for her individual critique and her best take at the commercial shoot is aired. Nigel immediately pipes up after watching it and says, “Samantha, you were distracted by yourself it seemed. It was just choppy and looked like you were rehearsing your lines.” J. comments on the lines that Samantha delivered in Dutch and Tyra interrupts to say she felt that Samantha’s Dutch accent was right on.

She asks Addy if he agrees and he does but says that she was not convincing enough for him and that she came across as insecure. Her picture is revealed next and her smiling photograph is praised first but then picked apart for looking forced, especially her smile. “Your smile is not a model-esque smile,” Tyra says.

Analeigh’s critique comes next and it is harsh after her botched commercial. “That was painful,” Tyra says after hearing Analeigh stumble through her lines. She comments on how well Analeigh had performed during week seven’s commercial but perhaps that had been due to the teleprompter she was able to use. Her photograph is then revealed and Paulina comments first: “It just looks like to me like a headshot for an actress.” And Tyra felt each while looking at her photographs that each frame seemed like the exact same. She addresses all of the girls and tells them they do not need to smile for each shot when Analeigh jumps in and states, “He kept saying ‘too sexy’ when I closed my lips!” Tyra then shows her the proper way to keep her mouth closed while not looking too sexy.

McKey is last and her.....
