America's Next Top Model: Analeigh - Amazing With A Captial "A"!
Rankings by Jacob D.
As of October 23, 2008
|
This week's episode of America's Next Top Model pushed all of the girls to the edge in different ways.
Personality conflicts arose when Marjorie and Elina continued to play up their supposed, "Outsider Status," and the other girls, particularly Sheena, confronted them.
The girls received lessons on how to show off various fashions and accessories and were presented with an unorthodox challenge. That challenge was to model clothes as, "Invisible Models," by wearing green bodysuits under their garments and over their heads so that you could only see the clothes when viewed on an accompanying TV screen. The girls tried to make it work without being seen and Elina won.
Instead of a photo shoot, the girls filmed their first CoverGirl commercials and personality was important.
At judging panel, Tyra revealed that the international destination for the season was Amsterdam, Holland, but only the six girls remaining after the elimination would be going.
After the judges viewed each girl's commercial and made their critiques, they felt Analeigh did the best job and she was called first when Tyra was handing out the still shots. Elina and Joslyn were left as the bottom two and even though Elina was still coming across as uptight and controlling, Joslyn was eliminated due to the declining quality of her performance over the past few weeks.
Here's my rankings for the week...

Analeigh
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 2
Despite being called second for the last three weeks when Tyra was handing out the photos, I've had a murky opinion about where Analeigh fits into the modeling world and if she's even a model at all. However, with this week's commercial, I thought she was amazing with a capital, "A+." Her naturally sunny disposition and approachability translated to that commercial and I thought, "This is Analeigh! She's the breezy, girl-next-door kind of model!" She really broke through in a big way in my eyes, but what did the judges think? Tyra said it was the best commercial she's ever seen in Top Model history and the judges were quick to rave as well. For finally breaking through and in such a big way, you've earned the number one spot on this week's scoreboard Analeigh. Well done!

Samantha
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 5
Samantha has just been one of the most consistent competitors. While she didn't have the best pictures in the first two weeks of the competition, she has been strong at the photo shoots and has had this lovely, bubbly persona. I think she's strong on all fronts, but there's still something I wonder: is Samantha a star? She's been solid throughout most of the competition, but is, "solid," enough at this point? I think Samantha is in need of one of those bright shining moments that announces her as a major contender, as almost all of the girls have had before her, but for now, her track record keeps her high in the rankings.

Sheena
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 7
The first thing I want to say is that despite what Elina or Marjorie may say, Sheena is not a nasty, mean-spirited idiot. I like how she stands up for herself and expresses herself and doesn't just fall in line with Elina and Marjorie's pity parties. Their main topic of concern is having a European upbringing that clashes with American style, but as Sheena very clearly pointed out, her mother is Asian and Sheena herself has been able to embrace both her Asian and American cultures and what we see before us is a bright, energetic young lady.
In this week's commercial shoot, Jay and the judges also saw a bright, energetic young lady. Sheena has personality to spare and this was the perfect showcase for that. She delivered in a big way and shoots up in the rankings. Now if she can just produce stronger photos, she'll be tough to beat.

McKey
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 3
I've always liked McKey, but the past couple of weeks have made McKey shine in my eyes. Her look is so ravishing. I mean, did you see her in that commercial? She has the sharpest, most unique, strongest high-fashion look of any of the girls here. She is gorgeous to look at. However, this week's commercial was about being heard and selling a product and McKey came up a little short. She slips in the rankings a bit, but her incredible potential is still very evident.

Marjorie
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 1
Marjorie's a lovely girl, a nice girl, but she's verging on pathetic. She has created this air of victimhood and wants people to pity her and love her. However, when they don't, or when she just doesn't do well in general, she blames the whole thing on being from Europe and calls it a day instead of trying to find a way to correct the situation. Newsflash Marjorie, and Elina by extension: YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY IMMIGRANTS TO EVER COME TO AND/OR LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY! I mean, over on the reality show, "Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency," you've had Nyabel from Africa and Sorin from Romania, but they've adapted without losing their cultural upbringings. Beyond that, you've got countless folks coming to America to pursue their dreams or whatever visions they have and they're making it. Get over yourself!
Anyways, now that the ranting is done for the week, I still think the judges are being too soft on Marjorie. Last week, she used her nerves and quirks to turn in a strong performance at the photo shoot, but this week, she retreated for the umpteenth time and this time in perhaps the most important challenge yet. Mr. Jay started to give Marjorie a little tough love, but you once again have the judges touching on Marjorie's faults and then not really pushing the issue. There's got to be a time where the gloves come off and Marjorie gets a dose of reality because the fashion industry is cutthroat. It will eat her alive unless she develops a thicker skin and that's not going to happen if things keep going the way they have been.

Elina
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 4
In the beginning, I thought Elina was so cool, but between all her bitchy scenes in last week's clip show and her journey to bitch territory this week, I'm starting to tire of her. She and Marjorie are just so stuck on being victims and isolating themselves from the other girls because no one understands them and this and that, that it's just growing pathetic. Whereas Marjorie plays the, "Poor-me-I'm-just-nervous-little-Marjorie act," Elina is trying to be the martyr for some reason, what with all the talk about her horrible mom, forcing her beliefs on the other girls in last week's clip show, and her self-absorbed declarations that no one understands her for any number of reasons, you just want to tell her to get off the cross because other people need the wood.
Beyond that little editorial though, the judges themselves are starting to tire of Elina, placing her in the bottom two for continuing to be too controlling and not breaking out of her shell. Time will tell how Elina handles this situation: will she sit back and continue to complain about how no one understands her, this time lashing out at Jay and the judges, instead of rising to the challenge or will this be the kick in the butt that she needs to spur herself into action? The latter will keep her around, but the former will get her sent home very quickly.
