America's Next Top Model 9: Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting
Episode 10 Recap by Jacob D.
November 26, 2007
Previously on America's Next Top Model:
The girls got lessons on being creative muses when they paired with up-and-coming designers for the challenge. Inspiring the designers to make a dress for them, the girls wore said dresses on the runway and talked about what went into them. Heather and Lisa stumbled, but Saleisha coasted to her third challenge win. The photo shoot saw the girls stranded out in the desert next to a burning car in a scene dubbed "Model Wasteland." Though it was Heather's weakest shoot yet, Lisa and Ambreal ended up in the bottom two at judging panel. Lisa was criticized for second guessing herself too much, but Ambreal was eliminated when the judges just didn't see her as a model. Six girls remain and they're all going to China. Who will be eliminated next?
Home Life Part 11:
After eliminations, the girls are understandably excited about going to China and scramble to pack. Lisa says her bottom two placement came out of nowhere. Meanwhile, I think it was a long time coming. Bianca voices her frustrations with Heather again, saying she has to talk to Heather more than her little sister. It's here that I realize Bianca is totally the type of person who, once 18 and she is just 18 at this point, decides "I'm a grown person! You can't tell me what to do. I'm an adult and I'm bigger than that!"
The girls fly off to China and ooh and ahh at the sights. After meeting Mr. Jay and Miss J, they head to the penthouse suite they'll be staying in while in China. There are only five beds though and so a mad rush ensues to grab one. Heather is left without and throws a fit when none of the girls want to share. Bianca, meanwhile, is loudly laughing and making fun of Heather.
Here's a situation that illustrates many points. One, though people should be more patient with Heather because of her disability, Heather can't be coddled if she is to learn and be a part of this industry. This is one time where I believe Heather is in the wrong. Two, for all her talk about Heather being juvenile, Bianca sure doesn't help by loudly laughing and poking at Heather. It's hypocritical and shows that Bianca just doesn't seem to have the patience, nor care to have the patience, to deal with Heather. Three, if all the beds are taken, sleep on a couch. If you're still around after the next judging panel, you'll get a bed shortly.
Jenah and Bianca decide to share the big bed that Saleisha nabbed and Heather gets her own. Situation diffused. Later, Heather decides to give up on stressing out over every little thing. That's a step in the right direction.
Lesson and Challenge- Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting:
The girls head out to a Chinese movie studio and are greeted by Louis Liu. He gives them a tour, but is stopped for an impromptu martial arts battle. He is in reality a martial artist and teaches the girls some kung fu poses which serve as a lesson in movement and control. The girls then dress up in some robes and watch a "wire-fu" demonstration. "Wire-Fu" is a term coined for all those martial arts flicks that feature the combatants flying around in the air through the assistance of wires. Think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The girls will pair up, be hooked up to harnesses, and hoisted into the air while Louis calls out poses for them to hit. Everyone seems ready to go except Bianca who complains about a fear of heights. Funny, this is the first I've ever heard of it.
Chantal and Jenah are the first to go up and they look awkward, but get into the swing of things. Sorry about the pun. I don't know what came over me. Ok, that was the last one. Lisa and Saleisha are next and while Lisa lets her fear show, Saleisha maintains composure. That leaves Bianca and Heather. The harnesses are attached, but Bianca is so unnerved that she asks what would happen if she decided not to do the challenge. Louis tells her she will be disqualified. Bianca and Heather get hoisted into the air a bit and Bianca decides right then and there that she will not participate. This is the first time a girl has chosen not to participate in a challenge. Oh sure, there was the case of Danielle in Cycle Six, who couldn't partake in the Thai dancing challenge, but she was hospitalized. This is the first time a girl willingly opted out.
Heather goes up into the air.....
