The Bachelor 11: Another Handsome Prince Looking For Love Commentary by Alisa October 3, 2007
Brad Womack is a good-looking guy and a 34-year old Southern gentleman. He is the only one out of five brothers that is unmarried so he's in a hurry. He wants to find love, get married and raise a family. Whew. That's a tall order. Then again he had twenty five women to choose from. Actually, that's more confusing than finding a couple on your own, I believe. Brad is willing to try anything at this point.
He is convinced that his future wife is among the twenty five "lovely" ladies that are being unloaded every few minutes (at least that's how we see it: it probably takes hours to film) from the relentless limos that keep pulling up in front of the usual Malibu mansion. The intrepid, fearless Bachelor keeps smiling and hugging and making sure that he compliments them on their name, gown, or makes some sort of small talk until he makes sure that they are herded inside where he promises all a wonderful time "later."
That isn't always true. Twenty five women and a limited time to impress is not a winning combination. However, everyone does their best except the ladies that overdo it on the wine and before they leave without a rose; we already know their fate.
Brad's Background
I found this to be quite fascinating. With his charming Georgia/Texas accent he tells his story from the beginning where he had a privileged upbringing in or near Atlanta. He and his brothers-careful, one of them is his twin-didn't even realize how good they had it until the parents divorced. Apparently, Mom did not have a first-class attorney because the lovely house and all of their possessions were left behind as she took the boys to Texas and they all ended up living in a double wide trailer.
Talk about a true riches to rags story.
Brad grew up fast, but I'm sure he was a popular guy because he is handsome and seemingly intelligent. However, he decided that college was not for him. Fair enough: Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard and look at him. Anyway, Brad worked on an oil rig in Texas for ten years where he claimed he learned a great deal. He doesn't get more specific than that. I'm assuming important life lessons were part of his valuable education.
I don't know what his brothers did but they are now partners in four lucrative bars and are entertaining the idea of building a hotel in Austin.
Back to Our Fabulous Saga
Chris prepares Brad for the female onslaught that is about to begin but Brad insists that he is looking forward to it. He definitely appears at ease as each woman approaches his welcoming smile. I don't know if it's my imagination, but he appears to take it all in his stride unlike some of his predecessors. I'm impressed.
The girls begin their little screams of delight before the limo driver even applies the brakes and then one by one they meet their dream man.
Since this is The Bachelor and it's in its eleventh season, it's getting a bit old to me. The greetings, the quick hugs, the grabbing of Brad while he's exchanging a few sound bites with one or two other women. I really wish that they would think of a new twist because this is getting so boring.
What Occurs Between Limo Drop-Offs
Chris sidles up to Brad to ask him how he's holding up and unless he's an Oscar winner, the guy is seriously digging the entire experience.
Then it's time to go inside, have a few conversations that last around five seconds, slurp a few sips of champagne, watch the barracudas make a beeline for "their man" and then the ones that weren't aggressive enough, or got a little too wasted, get their walking papers.
What Else Is New and Exciting About This Series?
So far, absolutely nothing. Why do we keep watching it? Speaking for myself, I just want to see those women get nastier and more avaricious. Their personalities will reveal themselves almost immediately. In fact, by Episode Two, the monster within already made itself known in many cases.
Honestly, haven't we learned by now.....
