The Bachelorette: The Mega Date, The Wrong Reasons, The Hidden Girlfriends
Recap and Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Gayl Killough

Last night on the Bachelorette, Canadian Jillian started out with a baker’s dozen of 13 bachelors to date. Will 13 prove to be a lucky number for Jillian?
When I found out there were going to be 13 bachelors instead of the expected dozen, I naively thought there would be two group dates of six and an individual date. I thought maybe the odd number was to account for the individual date. I was completely wrong. Instead there is going to be a group date of 10 bachelors, one individual date, and the dreaded two on one date where only one bachelor can receive a rose. This means yet another mega group date for the bachelors, although this is better than some guys being left out all altogether from a date.
There seems to be a lot of downtime for some of the bachelors, some of them have mentioned that they have days between dates and they don’t ever get to spend time with Jillian. I feel bad for them. I assume that even though the bachelors are there to date Jillian and be on a reality show, it appears that the bachelors spent most of their time stuck with the other bachelors. They don’t seem to be fond of all that time in the bunkhouse either.
Well, Host Chris has great news for the bachelors. They get to leave the bunkhouse forever. They all have to pack their bags because they will be traveling to Jillian’s home place of Vancouver, British Columbia. Wow, I have wanted the Bachelorette (and The Bachelor for corresponding seasons) to visit the home place of the Bachelorette earlier in the show season. I think this is very helpful for the Bachelorette to see how the bachelors respond to her home place while there are still a significant numbers left in the competition.
There are many reasons why reality show romances don’t last after the show is over, but I think a major factor is that the decisions take place in a fairy tale setting with fantasy dates that are very much removed from reality. So once the season is over, it falls apart. I have also gotten the impression that the difficulty in adjusting to moving to a new location or juggling locations for reality couples is a strain. This gives Jillian a chance to see the bachelors in her real world setting. Plus, I think people are more rational and level headed when they are on their home turf and feel at home.
I have never really disliked Jillian, but I think I like Jillian a thousand times better when she on her home turf. Also, finally in the voiceover, Jillian is giving some criteria that she is looking for in mate that fills in a lot of the missing gaps that I had from the previous episodes. I was really puzzled by Jillian in the previous episodes where in the voiceovers she mentioned that she was looking for certain traits, but the guys that she was picking for the special dates seemed to have an almost different set of characteristics. There was nothing wrong with either set of criteria, it was the disconnect that confused me.
As for knowing what Jillian wants I don’t have a clue. However, I do think that it is a lot of fun to try to read between the lines, overanalyze the clues, and try to guess what Jillian wants and then pick out the best bachelor for Jillian. In previous years I have concentrated more on the bachelors that I liked possibly for myself, but since I am not there and think that it is safe to say that I will never be in that position, I decided this time to focus on playing matchmaker for Jillian from the comforts of my home.
I mentioned that the show is highly edited.....
