Big Brother: Mistakes, Misconceptions and The Education of Dan
Compassionately Written, Smart-Ass-Big-Brother-Commentary by Cindy Rutolo Dietrich

Mistakes and misconceptions, we're bound to make, and have them. But
when I'm wrong, I say I'm wrong. And I couldn't have been more wrong
about Dan.
Apparently I was also wrong about this being a PG-13 House. Reportedly
there are some very X-rated conversations taking place. Fortunately for
me, I keep missing them. I have nothing against sex. I just don't need
to hear about it. I also can't believe some of the things discussed so
graphically, and in mixed company.
Still, these conversations are few enough that I keep missing them.
Again, thankfully. I'm still not hearing any of the vile, hateful cruel
remarks that made me hate last season so much.
As for Dan, I sorely misjudged this young man. I made assumptions about
his character based solely on his title and religion. That's the very
definition of prejudice. (Or at least the root of it.) I prejudged him
based on nothing more than his profession. Something I'm always railing
about Just goes to show that we all do it, whether we know it or not.
No, I totally had Dan pegged wrong. He may be a conservative, catholic
school teacher, but he neither preachers nor condemns. On the contrary,
he seeks to understand. He's also a gentle guy with an open mind who
seems to be making the most of his time in the Big Brother House in a
very unique way. It's almost become like a giant school yard full of
life lessons for him. Dan seems thankful for all of them.
"It's definitely opened my eyes. I'm not so naive, or judgmental."
"I'm also able to spend some time with an individual like Steven who is
gay and who can shed some light on a subject that I'm pretty much
uneducated about." Dan said,
Dan said he was afraid that Steven didn't tell him he was gay because he
feared he would be judgmental. Apparently nothing could be further
from the the truth. After listening with care to Steven he said, "When I
think of Steven I don't think of him as gay, I think of him as my
friend."
If everyone would approach new and possible 'strange' people, religions,
situations, and topics with Dan's non-judgmental, truly open desire to
learn and understand- what a wonderful land this would be. Frankly I
wish we had more people like Dan in teaching positions, and positions of
authority.
Because Dan drinks in every experience.
Evey thing is duly noted and.....
