Big Brother: Does the Punishment Fit the Crime? Commentary by Jenny Lane August 23, 2007
The events in the Big Brother house surrounding Jen have certainly brought out people's opinions of things! I've been getting a lot of emails, most of them expressing the opinion that big Brother is being inconsistent with their penalties and rule enforcements.
One reader wrote and asked why Dick and Jameka didn't get their slop penalty for hiding M&M's and olives. I must have completely missed that, so if you know anything about that, please email me!
Another reader said that Dick's behavior has been far more damaging than Jen's cigarette bleaching. I guess Big Brother doesn't want to have to define 'emotional abuse.' Besides, it would be next to impossible to determine when something crosses the line. Granted, Dick has been rude and assaulting in his verbal tirades, but this is not "reality," it's a game. Dick says things for a reason, to get under peoples' skin, and it works. I wouldn't put up with the things that he says in the real world, but I don't believe for a second that he talks to his friends that way.
Finally, someone suggested that Jen's punishment should be to be Dick's slave, and Eric should have had to be Jen's slave for the mustard thing. I don't know about that. Sure, it would have made good TV, but I think it would have been unwatchable, the way Dick is. Like I said before, Eric didn't destroy anything, he just mucked it up with mustard. The word that keeps being repeated here is "destroy" which is the way that Big Brother wants to define things.
What else could Big Brother have done other than given her the penalty vote? I guess they could have kicked her out right away, but they need her to be here for the Thursday show. If she wasn't on the block, she would have been automatically nominated next week but since she is, this is pretty much all they can do.
I do think that there should be a bigger penalty for skipping out on the sequester house. It's something that everyone agreed to. Sure, it won't be much fun, but they knew they'd have to do it coming into this. There should be something in the contract that they have to sign stating the penalty for ditching sequester. Maybe after this season, the rule book will double in size.
I'm actually surprised that this hasn't happened in earlier seasons. This will set a precedent, and Big Brother has to be careful how they handle it so that they know what to do next time! I'm assuming that Jen's going to get the boot tonight and then skip out of sequester, but I've been wrong before!
