Big Brother: Is Kail's Word On Anything Good?
Commentary by Professor Dan
July 28, 2007
I've been away from Big Brother for the last week or so, because of some real-life problems in my family. Yes, I know, the idea that real life might prevent one from obsessing over a bunch of hamsters in a Reality-TV cage might seem incredible to some, but there it is. However, thanks to recaps and commentaries and CBS being kind enough to show already-aired episodes of BB on Comcast On Demand, I'm back up to speed on what's been happening in BB-World. And what a week it has been!

To begin with, there was "Evil" Dick's reign of terror. Actually, I really thought that Dick did okay as HOH. I like seeing an HOH who boldly uses his power-if ya got it, flaunt it, right? I also agree with those who say that as soon as the Veto Ceremony is over, the now-powerless HOH should take a giant dose of shut-the-hell-up and play very, very nice thereafter. But that's just not in Dick's nature, so I wasn't surprised to see him continue to be, shall we say, aggressive in expressing himself. After initially being repulsed by Dick, I'm now rooting for him. He is a true character, and he is making this season of Big Brother much more fun.

Compare Dick's over-the-top quirkiness to the mayo-on-white-bread blandness of the recently evicted Mike. Who would you rather see on TV? I mean, really? Besides which, Dick is actually very smart, whereas Mike made one of the biggest blunders in BB history by pissing Dick off and getting himself put up on the block. Fundamental rule of BB: if you're not on the block, don't do anything that might put you on the block.

Under Pressure
I was also so happy to see Kail put under pressure this week. She has a moral compass that spins like a ballerina on crack-she would throw her own grandma under the bus if she thought it would help her. I mean, she did lie to Dick in that hammock-- blatantly, obviously, unequivocally lied to him that "if" she wasn't going to vote to keep him, she'd tell him. She then proceeded to campaign to get Dick out. Sorry, but that's being a conniving lowlife bitch. And when Dick rightly called her out on it, she just tried to say it wasn't so, when everybody knew it was so. That's not just being a bitch, that's just awful game play besides. Is there anybody in that house that now thinks Kail's word on anything is good? Maybe Jen the Clueless. Kail is an eviction waiting to happen. Dead woman walking, and good riddance. Sanctimonious "I run my town and I'm better than anybody else" bitch.

Then there's Zach. Does anybody like Zach? Is there anything to like about Zach? If there is, I'm not seeing it. He's one of those intense gamer-type Big Brother guys, and people don't like that. His only real ally in the house just got evicted, so where does that leave Zach? On Julie Chen's couch, and real soon. Maybe she'll have him streak out the front door: "You can just drop your bag right there Zach…"

From a strategy point of view, one thing that is interesting to me about BB this season is the lack of clear-cut alliances at this point. In previous seasons we often had clearly-drawn "sides", sometimes with the house being utterly split down the middle. Aside from the laughable "Mrs. Robinson alliance" of Kail, Mike, Zach, and Nick, which fractured almost as soon as it was formed, there hasn't really been a real alliance yet. There are pairs who seem to have bonded, like Amber and Dustin. But run through the house, and where are this year's "Four Horsemen"? Or "Jedi Council", or whatever other idiotic name you want to come up with? You have Jameka and Jessica, who float better than Ivory soap (I would have paid money to see Dustin blow that last question and thrust Jameka into the totally-unwanted position of being HOH!) There's "America's Player", the smarmy Eric, who reminds me of that obnoxious nerd Richard from the first season of "Beauty and the Geek" (except that Richard was actually funny, and Eric only thinks he is.) But Eric is trying to be a friend to all, which is, of course, the classic floater strategy. But if everybody's a floater, what do you have? Other than a boring game, that is?

Dustin is actually trying to play the game, as is Dick. If I were Dustin, I'd keep Dick close to me (geez, what a homoerotic sentence! But you know what I mean, right?) They could actually go far together, and who better for nice-guy Dustin to be in the Final Two with? Dustin could actually put together an alliance that could run the board in this game: Dustin, Amber, Jameka, and Dick. Jameka is playing the floater, but she has game. Amber is a worthless crybaby, but she'd jump off a cliff for Dustin. If Dustin could somehow get Danielle off without pissing off Dick, then a foursome of Dustin, Dick, Amber, and Jameka would rule the game totally. But that might not be possible because of Danielle. How to get rid of Danielle without pissing off Dick? That's the real problem, and maybe it can't be done-- in which case, Dustin needs to get Dick out now. If Danielle goes, Dick will go ballistic, but the reverse is probably not true. And Danielle is easy pickings once Daddy is gone-there's no game there. Possibly an alliance of Dustin, Amber, Jameka, and Eric would work, too. Eric is persuasive, if annoying. Of course, the trouble with Eric in anybody's alliance is that he has to do what "America" says, and that could be a problem, although obviously it's a problem Dustin couldn't know about.

The thing is, without clear alliances and battle lines, we are likely to just meander boringly from week to week, with obvious misfits like Kail and Zach and Jen and Nick as easy consensus evictions, and HoH's holding "house meetings" to decide who the nominees should be. But without clear-cut alliances of more than two people, this "middle game" of BB looks to be just driven by personality and who fits in best. Which benefits mainly the floaters, and who wants that? I'm waiting to see someone actually take charge of this game!
