Big Brother: Take Your Twist And Shove It
Commentary by Professor Dan
August 20, 2007
Wow, this has been a real roller-coaster ride in the Big Brother 8 house! I loved Dustin's face when the Chenbot 2000 announced that he was the one making the Walk of Shame. He really was insufferably smug and full of himself, and it's always nice when a person like that gets what's coming to him. And then Danielle wins HOH again! I glad that Dick and Danielle didn't screw Eric and Jessica by putting one or both of them up.

Dick promised them safety (for whatever that's worth), but of course Danielle had what the government likes to call "plausible deniability"-did she ever tell Eric and/or Jessica that they'd be safe with them? I can hear her now: "That was my father, not me. I'm not responsible for what he says or does!" I wouldn't put it past the conniving little bitch. She really is a piece of work, the way she put her dad up to stuff and egged him on privately in his outrageous behavior, then publicly did the "don't blame me, blame my father" routine.

When we were watching BB, my wife questioned why Dustin wasn't told about Eric's role as "America's Player", as some other evictees were. Upon a moment's reflection she said "Oh yeah, it's because he's on the jury." Which is true, I'm sure-Dustin will more than likely be sequestered and end up making his vote, as will the others, completely ignorant of the things Eric really did, or why he did them. I wonder what happens if Eric is evicted and goes to the sequester house-will he still be prohibited from revealing the twist to his fellow jurors?

If I'm Eric, and I make the final two, I'm begging BB to let the cat out of the bag at that point. Because Eric had to follow "America's" orders, Nick was evicted, as was Kail, as was Dustin. And how many other people will Eric send packing on "America's" orders?

Granted that Dustin is the only one at this point who made the jury, but he can't be liking Eric much now, can he?

And there may well be some others coming along who will feel backstabbed by Eric because of this "America's Player" farce. If he's not permitted to tell them "Hey, it wasn't me, I had to do what 'America' said," then he may be totally poisoned with the jury. If they know, maybe not so much. For instance, right now, I'm sure Dustin is very unhappy with Eric, but if he knew about the twist, I think he'd understand and let it go.

Even if Eric is evicted, a case can be made for telling the jurors at that point about the twist. Why? Because so far some of "America's Player's" actions have been held against other people (like Nick), and those people suffered in the game because BB is running this scam. The same thing may happen to others before Eric is evicted (if he is.) The fair thing would be to give the jurors an informed choice-let them know precisely what Eric did on "America's" behalf, so that those actions aren't attributed to others. In fact, if Eric is evicted, I wouldn't mind seeing the Chenbot inform the entire house of the twist as soon as he's gone. Clear the air, you know?

Honestly, I don't like the twist. If I were Eric, I'd be royally pissed that a bunch of stupid people with cell phones are basically playing my game for me. And they are- "America" tells him who to target and who to vote out, regardless of what he might want or what might actually be best for him in the game. What if "America" decides to have him turn on, say, Jessica? That would be incredibly stupid as far as his game goes, but he'd have to try to get 'er done anyway.

Big Brother is about personalities, perceptions, and alliances made and broken. It's a hard enough game to play when you are responsible for your own actions. It's got to be brutal to have to play the game as somebody else wants, whether you like it or not. And even worse to have your game play controlled by the capricious whims of "America." If I were Eric, I would have told BB to take their twist and shove it.
