Big Brother 9;

"Death Becomes Reality On CBS's Big Brother Reality Show"

Big Brother Commentary by Cindy Rutolo Dietrich
March 22, 2008

It may have been the first real moments of genuine emotion being expressed inside the Big Brother house. Ryan Whitesall shared a secret with fellow houseguest, Shelia on Friday. He'd gotten the sad news that day, about his beloved 90 year old Grandfather's passing.

I was shocked, and breathless. It touched me so much.

Finally, there was no game play.

This was awful, and sad.

This was terrible, and bad.

This was really, reality.

Ryan tells Shelia about his upsetting news, but he doesn't want anyone else to know. Doesn't want to play the sympathy card. Plus, he probably doesn't want his heartache exposed, and ultimately exploited by all. After all everything becomes meat for some of these fiends. He watched Josh and Chelsia use Amanda's Father's suicide to attack and weaken her. No one needs to stoop so low. But for Joshuah and James and Chelsia, no lows too low to go. In fact latter that night Chelsia went on a rampage. She viciously attacked Natalie verbally. Chelsia was having a fit because she knows she's probably getting evicted. So, she wanted to hurt someone. Planned on squirtting ketchup on Natalie then saying, that's your baby. ( From an abortion). An action that the majority of the houseguests feels is warranted because Natalie told them about her abortions. That's the kind of mentality, and lack of any trace of empathy we're dealing with. So Ryan's decision to keep his news secret is wise.

Ryan tells Shelia that he wanted to share this with her, because he knows how compassionate she is. "I trust you. You care about people." Plus, he says, she's like the mom of the house.

"I am a m

om," Shelia says moving closer to him. I don't understand why can't he leave? Shelia asks the same thing. "Is it only for immediate family?" Shelia asks about Big Brother's possibly not allowing him to leave to attend the funeral of his Grandfather.

He said yes.

Nice, CBS. Nice policy you have there.

"I was crying earlier," Ryan admitted. "I had to get it out."
