Biggest Loser 4: Grandpa is the Big Man on "Campus" Recap by Donna Emery
September 13, 2007
This week on the Biggest Loser Special, the eldest contestant got some much-deserved respect from the others, and the fourth season of my favorite show got off to an exciting start.
The show began by looking back at its first 3 exciting seasons, and reviewed some clips of many of the people we've come to love during their time on the show. The announcer told how the Biggest Loser phenomenon has spread to 90 countries.
We got some short glimpses of this seasons' contestants, and heard about some of their motivations to lose weight:
Neil talked about being a 25-year old who was diagnosed with health problems that are more frequently found in older men. He said he wants to be able to fit into the seats at the Red Sox's stadium again.
Hollie is a teacher and coach, who tearfully told of being called a "fat pig." She wants to be a better role model to her students.
Patty said that losing weight is a life or death decision for her. She was recently told that she has elevated liver enzymes and this made her afraid that she won't be fit enough for her children.
Bill said that he has something that no other contestant has: a twin brother who's also entered into the contest.
Bryan, who calls himself "B" said that he generally thinks he is handsome, but says it's a shame that he's let himself slip so much.
All the contestants walked to a spot in the desert where they were met by the show's new hostess, Alison Sweeney who welcomed them cheerfully. She said that she was familiar with the struggle of weight loss, since she'd struggled with her own weight in the past. She advised them not to settle for what they have. She reminded them that though change is scary, they were being brave enough to risk a change.
Kae was thrilled to see that Alison was the new hostess, and felt a bit star struck to see the "Days of Our Lives" star.
Alison told them that the show had helped people lose 6,500 lbs - which adds up to 23,000,000 calories. She asked the new contestants if they are up to the challenge. She reminded them that the winner will get $250,000. Everyone was up for that challenge!
To help them to reach their goals, she told them that they'd soon be joined by their trainers: Bob and Kim. Since they were nowhere to be seen, the gang wondered a bit about where they might be. Overhead, there was a plane and it soon became evident that Bob and Kim would be arriving by parachute!
Alison helped them begin their weight loss quest by telling them that once Bob and Kim landed, the contestants would race to see who got to them first. The first person to get to Bob would be the captain of the Blue Team and the first person to reach Kim would be the captain of the Red Team. Being captain became even more important when she further explained that the captains would get to select their own teams - and that each captain would be able to select only 5 other team members.
In other words, 6 people wouldn't be selected. Alison told them that the 6 who were not selected would be going home. Nobody wanted to see their dream end right there.
Jerry joked that at 62 years old, he might be in big trouble when competing against the younger people.
