Biggest Loser 4: Grandpa is the Big Man on "Campus"
Recap by Donna Emery
September 13, 2007
As Kim and Bob neared the ground, each told about their own philosophy of weight loss coaching. Both vowed to be tough on the contestants. When the trainers landed in the desert, Alison gave the signal…. and the contestants were off and running!

Lezlye gasped that she'd been out of breath since she reached the bottom of the hill.

Kae said she'd done her best, but the guys had caught up to her.

Nicole said she'd been running "full speed ahead."

Kim said that she felt their spirit, as she saw them draw closer to her.

Amber said that she hadn't realized how out of shape she was.

As the leading contestants drew closer it became evident that Jerry - the oldest of the contestants - was going to win the race. Phil, an ex-firefighter was embarrassed to think that "an old guy is going to beat me." Jerry did win, and reached out to Bob, with a hug. Phil came in second and happily reached out to hug Kim.

Once the two winners had been decided, the rest of the group decided to press on and finish anyway. Nicole was the first woman to finish the race. Eventually, all of them did finish… except for Amber, who lagged behind.

Amber lamented:" I'm so out of shape that it scares me!" The others unanimously decided to go back and help her finish the race, and she was grateful.

When everyone had completed the race, Alison congratulated Jerry and Phil on becoming the team captains. She told them that everyone would now go to the "Last Chance Saloon" and get to know each other. She hoped that by chatting, the captains would figure out which of the contestants to choose for their teams.

Jerry realized that he wouldn't just be deciding who would help his team; he'd also have to decide who would not get the chance to be on the show.

At the "saloon", Amy decided that she wanted to be sure that the others heard her story. She said she'd pushed herself as hard as she could in order to run the race. She also told that she'd been a size 5-6 when she got married, but after gaining weight from having two babies she knew it was time to make some changes.

One of the women said that her husband kept a picture of her on his desk at work - but it is a picture of how she'd looked when they got married. She grinned as she admitted that she looked fine in the picture - but the picture is 5 years old. She hasn't been to an office party with him for those five years, since she's too ashamed of the way she looks now.

A man got emotional when he told of how his daughter had said that she doesn't want him to die.

David said that he's got a beautiful wife, yet people look at the two of them together and wonder "why is she hugging her brother?"

One of the women said that her whole family is fit and so she often feels like she's not part of the family. She revealed that every year, her family runs a race - and that someday, she wants to go with them.

Lezlye said that she has been through a lot and it made her strong. "But then came Hurricane Katrina," she shrugged. "Sometimes I wish I'd been destroyed along with my house." The rest of the contestants admonished her not to think that way.

After hearing all the stories, Phil concluded: "we're all here for a reason."

Jerry again reflected on the big burden of choosing teams.

Hollie was sure she'd be chosen, since she is "the strongest girl here."

Neil got upset.....
