Biggest Loser Couples: Senior Moments
Commentary by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery
May 13, 2009
This week on the Biggest Loser, we all found out that, for this season, age not only brings wisdom.

It brings prizes.

The season was longer than ever – and the finale was much too long – but it looked worth it for most of the contestants. What amazing transformations – both of their bodies and their lives. I was in tears more than once.

It was wonderful to see the success stories: Mike, Ron, Tara, Kristin (although what was she thinking, with that hair?), Cathy, Nicole, Estella, Filipe, Sione, and even Dan. It was sad – but not surprising - to see the others hadn’t done as well. Yes, they made a dent in their weights, but not the kind of transformations this show has been all about.

And for Jerry: he was the guy we’d probably all counted out, as the guy who was married to that nice old lady? The guy who passed out at the first workout? He came on stage looking like he was going to be blown away by Filipe’s power shouts and ended up winning the at-home prize.

Which would have gone to Mike, if the voters had been thinking straight.

To give our Mikey credit, he lost over 200 pounds and came within 5 pounds of taking the big prize. But, he didn’t win. And, unlike season one and two, there is no money prize for third place.

So, if Ron had made it to the finals instead – just as I thought, Mike would have won the at-home prize. But he didn’t.

I can’t really complain. Mike got his life turned around. He’s a certified hottie and he’s got the tools to keep himself healthy and handsome – and to help his brother Mike. He did an amazing job and he can be proud of himself. It would have been nice for him to win the money.

But Jerry’s win was heartwarming, too. This show helped so many people change, this season. Some of these people looked entirely different at the finale. So, why did they need to draw it out into a three hour clipping fest, crammed full of repetitions and filler and then save only two minutes for Helen’s triumphant win? I would have liked to see more of her after the win. I’d also have loved to have heard more from Bob and Jillian; their reactions to the winners (both the grand prize and the at-home prize) would have been priceless.

But, alas, the show was full of stuff we’d already seen – most of it, more than once – and had very little new material. I’d even have settled for a Ziploc or Jenny O commercial instead of the ninety ninth showing of Tara’s First Puke.

But, speaking of new material, why did they put those two nice ladies (who were pretty much interchangeable, in my opinion) through the faux-training in order to earn a spot on the Ranch? Is this supposed to make us more invested in Amanda’s potential success? And, what criteria did the voters use, to make this selection? What did Amanda have that Erinn didn’t have.

Could it be … a pink shirt?

One of my readers sent me an email this morning (thanks, K!) to call my attention to this fact, and it may be coincidence, but who knows? After three years of ladies in Pink winning the grand prize, maybe people are beginning to expect Pink to be the magic color? And, if so, maybe they should retire it? How about Aqua, Teal, Gold, or Chartreuse?

I know the color didn’t.....
