Biggest Loser Families: It’s All In the Game
Episode 5 Recap by Donna Emery

This week on the Biggest Loser, many of the contestants finally grasped the full significance of the “game” aspect of this contest.
It’s about time.
Although all of us who struggle with weight loss issues might wish otherwise – and I include myself in that number – this show isn’t just about getting healthy. I do respect the efforts and accomplishments of all the contestants, and applaud them for their success, but for the most part it turns out that the winner of The Biggest Loser is really just the Biggest Game Survivor.
This episode began with Heba’s lament about her husband, Ed. She reminded us all that they had had to decide between them, last week and had decided, together to send Ed home. She didn’t understand why Ed hadn’t lost weight. “He put in the hours at the gym,” she protested. She expressed her disappointment, and moaned that they’ve only been married for a year and a half. She said that Ed had made her stronger, and she feared it would be a difficult week.
The temptation for the week led the contestants into a room full of tables of junk food. All of their mouths were watering and they were drooling over the goodies. Hostess Allison Sweeney welcomed them. She told them that up until now, they’d stressed the role of families on the show. However, she wanted them to learn that in life, you can only rely on yourself. She told them that the temptation would allow one of them to take control of the game. She said that they would have 10 minutes to choose whether they would eat any of the junk foods. The person who ate the most calories at the end of the 10 minutes would get to decide on how to divide the contestants into two teams. There would be no more “family” groups; just the Blue and Black teams. The further catch was that they would have to do the temptation in the dark. No one would see what anyone else ate – or didn’t eat.
Brady realized that this would give someone “all the power.”
Red’s Amy was afraid she’d lose Bob, as a trainer – or lose her husband, Phillip. Heba knew that it was a good reward, and also knew she didn’t want to lose Bob.
When the lights went out, the contestants were momentarily stunned. Phillip said it was “as dark as a coffin.” Coleen wondered who might take a chance and eat. Some of the families whispered to each other about strategy.
Heba spoke up. “I’m willing to stand up and eat a donut. I want to keep the teams the way they are.” She addressed Red’s Amy: “ I know you and Phil want to stay together and to keep Bob, so I am willing to do this.”
Amy nodded, but Phil resented Heba’s motives and methods. “She is trying to control the game,” he said.
Heba admitted that she wanted a chance to make the choice. “I lost my husband last week,” she reminded them. “I don’t want to lose my trainer.”
Shellay wasn’t willing to take her decision without a protest. “You may think everyone wants the teams to stay as they are,” she argued. “But you have two men, and we are here to win. So, we want to have a man on our team.”
Shellay’s daughter, Amy didn’t want.....
