Biggest Loser Families: Coddling Doesn’t Burn Calories
Episode 8 Recap by Donna Emery
November 14, 2008
This week on the Biggest Loser, Vicky gleefully welcomed Ed back to Blue Country, and thought she had Purple’s Amy firmly indoctrinated into the Alliance.

She figured wrong.

I know there’s lots of editing on reality shows, and that remarks made by the contestants can easily be played in ways that don’t tell the whole or accurate story of the way people truly act and react during the competition. All I can say is that unless this show has been expertly edited to hide Phillip’s darker nature, the Fearsome Foursome has made him a target for reasons known only to them.

The episode began with a somber mood showing the Black Team’s sadness over sending Phillip home. When they entered the lounge, not a Blue face showed the least bit of sadness, which was to be expected. Coleen tried to put a good face on it by saying how hard the decision had been. Renee acknowledged that Phillip had loved his wife so much and that they knew his journey wouldn’t end.

At first, the Blues tried to keep their glee to themselves but their gloating was apparent. Heba did try; asking Michelle how they were feeling about it. Michelle responded that it had been harder than they might have thought. She called Phillip “a great teammate.” Vicky dropped the act and giggled: “it’s a win-win, then.” Brady smiled in agreement. Coleen was disgusted by their undisguised joy. She hadn’t expected them to mourn for Phil, but the spite contained in their reaction was hard to stomach. Vicky even kicked it up a notch and openly shouted that she was rejoicing that Phil is gone. She clapped her hands. “I am SO happy! It took me 7 weeks but I am finally rid of that sleezebucket.” She even did a happy dance, despite Brady’s caution to stop being so open about her negative feelings.

Michelle thought her display was tacky. She wished the entire Blue Team would go home. Me too, sister, though there may be hope for one of them, yet.

Vicky continued in her tirade against Phil. “He doesn’t deserve to be the Biggest Loser. He is a horrible role model.” As compared to, maybe, her? I don’t think so.

Bob joined his team and asked them what the result of elimination had been. He wasn’t surprised that Phillip was gone. Purple Amy realized that they had all made “the final 7.”

Vicky calmly stated that they were now approaching the result that she had set with her husband and the Orange team, at the beginning of the competition: that they’d stick together and be the four members of the finale. She said all they had to do now is use their majority to “pick off the Black team, one by one and be 4 members of Blue; standing strong at the finals.”

Bob summed Vicky up by saying she’s the “biggest gameplayer to ever to be on the Biggest Loser. She’s methodical, she’s maniacal, and she’s got all her puppets on a string.”

Jillian was sad to see her girls hadn’t gained a team member, but even sadder to hear that the Alliance had gained another member. But, being Jillian she didn’t mope for long. She quickly gathered up the girls and led them to the gym. She told them it’s time to stop focusing on the opposition and to focus on themselves.

Renee got the message. “We are motivated. We won’t quit,” she vowed. “We are a force to be reckoned with.” She hoped their team would all be part of the finale. It was the same thing as Vicky had said, but from Renee it seemed much easier to stomach.

Coleen realized that “it’s past serious. We are down to seven contestants. I want to go to the finale, and I want to be the winner.”

When Bob came into the gym he saw his team on the treadmills. He said he wanted to give them a challenge. Vicky pouted and said she doesn’t like challenges. He explained that whoever ran the furthest in three minutes would win a banana fudge sundae. Amy figured a banana fudge sundae might be “a zillion calories”, but she was curious. Heba wasn’t tempted. “I don’t want to eat a banana fudge sundae. That’s what got me here.” At the end of the three minutes, Amy had won.

Bob led her into the kitchen where he produced – Jello Sugar Free pudding in the new banana fudge flavor. It is 60 calories, and, with a little Cool Whip on top it is only 80 calories. Amy reported it is delicious and she prefers it to a real banana fudge sundae. When they were finished with their treat, Bob gave her the rest of the six pack. She said she wanted to hide it. Good for her.

The contestants were next gathered in the lounge for a meeting with Allison Sweeney. Coleen knew that whenever Ali came in, it either meant bad news or a twist in the game. She first told them that there would be “no more teams. You are competing as individuals and it’s every person for themselves.”

Vicky shrugged. Alison could say there were no more teams, she figured, but she felt secure about her Alliance. “Blue will kill Black,” she vowed.

Michelle wasn’t fooled, either. “I am scared. We are still the underdogs.”

Allison continued: “this contest has shown you can all stand up to adversity. You’ve proved your worth by being measured on the scale. So, we’re going to the scale right now.”

No one was happy about that. They wondered if they’d be weighed again, so soon. Heba predicted “something’s going down.”

Allison reminded them that competing as individuals meant: “the only person you can count on is yourself. You may think your toughest competition is in this room, but you’re wrong. Your toughest competition is going to walk through this door.”

In walked Phillip, smiling and waving. Heba groaned: “Phil is back. This is the best day ever. NOT.” Vicky chimed in with: “If he comes back into the game, they’d better get a psychiatrist in the back room because I’m going to need to see someone.”

But Phillip wasn’t the only person coming back. His wife, Amy soon joined him – and so did all the other eliminated contestants. Heba got excited; she knew she’d soon see her Ed. When she did, she ran to him happily. Purple Amy gladly reunited with her mom, Shellay. Amy said that her mom looked like she didn’t need to lose any more weight. The Grey and Green teams – who hadn’t been seen since weeks one and two - came back to remind us all of what they’d look like.

When all the returned contestants filed in, Coleen looked around for her dad, Jerry. She got worried because he wasn’t there. Allison soon assured her he’d wanted to come but had to work.

Allison anticipated everyone’s next question and said she knew they all would want to know how the returned contestants had done. So, she invited them all to get on the scale. She then said that only one of them would be given a chance to return to the Ranch, and that the person who’d return would not be decided by the results of the weigh in. The ticket back to the Ranch would be given to the winner of a challenge that would take place on the next day.

Heba was relieved. A challenge meant her Ed “has a real shot” at returning.

First, Coleen’s dad Jerry had sent a video message for her. He greeted her and said he was going to get weighed in. His starting weight had been 380 and he now weighs 339, which is a loss of 41 pounds. He encouraged Coleen to stay strong and said he’d see her at the finals.

Coleen was touched. Michelle gave her a sympathetic hug and she said she’s proud of her dad. “He’s doing what he said he’d do.”

It was now time for the rest of them to get weighed.

Shellay went first. She had started at 216 and now looks great at 177. She’s lost 39 pounds and says she’s now stronger and better. Daughter Amy is proud of her.

Grey’s Tom said, “the whole.....
