Biggest Loser Family Edition: One Breath Away From More
Rankings by Donna Emery
As of October 9, 2008
This week on the Biggest Loser, Jillian auditioned for the part of Drill Sergeant, while Bob kept cool and lost a team member.

Losing weight is a serious enterprise, and Jillian has always been much harsher with her team members than Bob. Her success record speaks for itself: on every season that she’s been with the show, someone from her team has won the big prize. During season 4, every person at the finale was from her Black Team.

So, maybe Jillian knows what she’s talking about and maybe the ladies should listen. But I admit I don’t understand why she thinks that tearing people down will help build them up. It certainly worked this week.

I love Bob and the way he cares about his team members. If I were on the Ranch, I’d prefer to be trained by Bob. But if that meant I wouldn’t win, would it be worth it? I just know that if someone yelled at me like Jillian, I’d be a puddle of tears, too.

This week was all about relationships. Coleen mourned her solo fight with Dad going home; Michelle wondered how she could love and be angry with her Mom and Vicki whined to Brady that he’s holding her back. Shellay and Purple Amy somehow imagined they would get some fun out of bonding 24 hours with Jillian, and Phil and Amy visited with their kids and remembered what they are working for.

As the weeks go by we see many types of emotions played out in the contest and it’s always interesting to see how these impact on the contestants’ weight loss. The standings this week are very close, in the middle, so it’s really anyone’s guess who might win. I will say that it’s looking more and more likely that it will be another woman, but of course Phil and Brady – who are now leading the pack – will have something to say about that.

I’m enjoying the Trainer Tips this season, but as always I could do without the constant commercials. This week’s was for Subway and while I really love it (and now I’m craving it) the commercials are very annoying.

For now, here’s how they stand in the running for the prize:

Brady
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 2
A 36-year old pharmacist from Hourna, Louisiana. Brady is proud of his Native-American heritage and wants to be a good example for their two children. He says he is the counselor, but considers his team to be very competitive.

I liked his concern for Vicky, and I see how hard he’s working. He can be proud of the 49 pounds that he’s lost. If he stays in the game, he might just win. He’s now lost 14.37%

Phillip
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 1
A 41-year old real estate agent from Greer, South Carolina. To me, Phillip looks a lot like TV’s “Dr. Phil”, and he seems just as likeable. He began to gain weight while serving in the Air Force. He’s been married to his high school sweetheart for almost 20 years.

I still love this guy and I’m rooting for the Red Team to win. He’s positive and supportive and fun to watch. He has now lost 44 pounds and that is 14.19%

Amy
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 4
A 26-year old purchaser from Auburn Hills, Michigan. She’s sweet and bubbly and she and her mom work well together. She’s currently studying cosmetology and has battled her weight since middle school.

Amy really pulled ahead this week. Attitude or no attitude, I guess her time with Jillian paid off. I hope she continues to show this level of effort. She has lost 31 pounds or 12.97%.

Renee
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 7
A 46-year old event planner from Dallas, Texas. She’s just as lovely as daughter Michelle, although she worries about the effects of her weight on her new marriage. She wants to travel to Hawaii after she loses some weight.

Pink Mom was a good example for her daughter this week, and had a great result. She has lost 30 pounds or 11.24%.

Colleen
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 6
A 23-year old receptionist from Cleveland, Ohio. She’s a cute but formidable opponent who has struggled with her weight since her teens. She wants to be more active and have a healthier life

I am so glad she survived this week, but it’s only going to get tougher if she and Heba are the only ones on their own. I hope she lasts for a few more weeks. She has lost 24 pounds or 11.01%

Michelle
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 3
A 26-year old aspiring aviation engineer from Dallas, Texas. She has a beautiful smile and a personality to match. She looks forward to taking off enough weight to take charge of her life.

Keep the focus on yourself, Michelle! She is so pretty and I love her spirit. She has now lost 26 pounds and that’s 10.74%

Amy
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 8
A 40-year old real estate agent from Greer, South Carolina. This bubbly lady is a dynamo at the office, but raising her autistic son took a toll on her emotions and led to a weight gain. Now, she wants to get healthy and be a better role model.

It was so sweet to watch her with her kids, and what a great week she had! She’s now lost 30 pounds, or 10.34%

Shellay
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: 9
A 51-year old stay-at-home mom from Royal Oaks, Michigan. She hopes to enter the job market, and wants to prove that she can lose the necessary weight.

What was she thinking? 24 hours with Jillian would be fun? In which universe? I don’t know why Shellay is so laid back with Jillian, but so far she’s lost 22 pounds or 10.19%.

Vicky
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: 5
A 37-year old anesthestist from Hourna, Louisiana. She’s been good at juggling career and home up until now, but realizes she hasn’t taken enough time for herself. She’s setting out to prove that working moms are a force to be reckoned with!

She wasn’t quite as mean-spirited this week, and it was touching to see how much she cared about the Orange Team. She has now lost 29 pounds, or 10.14%.

Heba
Current Ranking: 10         Previous Ranking: 11
A sales representative from Raleigh, North Carolina. It’s easy to like Heba. Her bubbly personality and determination make her fun to watch. She really wants to have a child someday, and knows that better health would be helpful.

I hope she continues to drop those big numbers, because I really like Heba. She has now lost 28 pounds or 9.52%.

Ed
4th Elimination
A chef from Raleigh, North Carolina. Cooking delicious food all day doesn’t help in his quest to lose weight, but he and Heba would like to have a family, so he’s hoping a weight loss will be the key to better health.

What a beautiful speech he made to Heba. What a sweet thing to see his sincere feelings for her. He’s done so well at home; I am looking forward to seeing him at the finale.

Jerry
3rd Elmination
A 51-year old police sergeant from Cleveland, Ohio. We already know he is the “sickest contestant”, so I have to give him kudos for however long he and Colleen make it through the game.

I will miss Jerry and seeing his relationship with Coleen, but for his sake it was best for him to go home. If you saw the transformation video, you know Jerry’s doing great now! On the show he lost 17 pounds, or 4.43 %

Tom
2nd Elimination
A 42-year old cab driver from Everett, Massachusetts. He sits in a cab all day, so it’s tough to keep the weight off. He wants to find more time and energy to spend with his family.

Tom did a great job while he was at the Ranch. He began at 314 lost 8.59% before he was eliminated.

LT
1st Elimination
A 23-year old cab driver from Everett, Massachusetts. He works with his dad in the taxi, and has copied some of dad’s bad food habits.

L.T. tried his best, but the curse of Week Two caused him to gain weight. He began at 357 and lost 4.2%
I’m looking forward to see how the balance shifts, next week.
