Biggest Loser Family Edition: Oh, Thank Heba!
Rankings by Donna Emery
As of October 15, 2008
This week on the Biggest Loser, the families were merged into teams and it was all about control, for Heba.

I can understand her reluctance to lose Bob and her desire to try to have a say in her future, but I think she was unfair to Phillip. He had no obligation to answer her; he had just as much right to try to gain the advantage in the temptation as she did. And, after all, she really didn’t give him a chance to explain himself.

Splitting up Amy and Phil may have made sense to Heba if she truly thought Phillip was somehow plotting against her, but I don’t understand how she could have missed the fact that giving Jillian a man on her team would give Black an advantage. If she wanted her team to have the edge, and yet still felt the need to get back at the Red Team, why not send Amy over to the Black Team? She let her personal feelings take precedence; and, in this game, that can come back and bite you in the behind.

I had some sympathy for Michelle’s emotional meltdown, but I have to admit that before this week I’d thought her mother’s “desertion” had occurred for her at a much earlier age. Although it must have hurt her to see her parents split up, I am glad she didn’t let her emotions dictate her decision about staying on the show. I also wonder what might have happened, if she hadn’t gotten immunity this week. Would her ambivalence have bought her a ticket home, or would the team still have tried to ditch one of the moms?

I was very impressed by the contestants’ endurance for the challenge this week. Brady really stunned me: running 20 miles? He is amazing! That’s an impressive feat for someone who is fit; let alone for someone overweight. Thinking about how many times they climbed that mountain in the heat is very inspiring. I know I couldn’t have done it that many times.

Jillian and Bob were both supportive and inspiring to their teams, and it’s kind of nice to see the families merge, as we get closer to the end.

For now, here’s how they stand in the running for the prize:

Amy
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 3
A 26-year old purchaser from Auburn Hills, Michigan. She’s sweet and bubbly and she and her mom work well together. She’s currently studying cosmetology and has battled her weight since middle school.

As negative as her attitude was last week, both the improved attitude and the effort really paid of for Amy this week. She really pulled ahead, and, for the first time, a woman is in the lead! She’s lost 40 pounds, or 16.74%

Brady
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 1
A 36-year old pharmacist from Hourna, Louisiana. Brady is proud of his Native-American heritage and wants to be a good example for their two children. He says he is the counselor, but considers his team to be very competitive.

He only lost one notch this week, and he is still the guy to beat. If he hangs in there, he could win it all. He amazed me with his endurance, and he’s now lost 55 pounds or 16.13%

Amy
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 7
A 40-year old real estate agent from Greer, South Carolina. This bubbly lady is a dynamo at the office, but raising her autistic son took a toll on her emotions and led to a weight gain. Now, she wants to get healthy and be a better role model.

Another lady pulled herself up in the ratings. She’s now pulled ahead of her husband and I love her determination and spirit. She’s one of my favorites this season. She has lost 36 pounds or 15.72%

Phillip
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 2
A 41-year old real estate agent from Greer, South Carolina. To me, Phillip looks a lot like TV’s “Dr. Phil”, and he seems just as likeable. He began to gain weight while serving in the Air Force. He’s been married to his high school sweetheart for almost 20 years.

He’s right behind Amy, even though they’re not together any more. I love this guy’s determination and positive spirit. I hope he lasts a while, just to show Heba she was wrong to give him away. He has lost 52 pounds or 15.71%

Vicky
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 9
A 37-year old anesthestist from Hourna, Louisiana. She’s been good at juggling career and home up until now, but realizes she hasn’t taken enough time for herself. She’s setting out to prove that working moms are a force to be reckoned with!

She was more subdued in this episode, and her inability to hike may have cost her team the win, it didn’t stop them from winning the weigh in, or her from pulling up in the ranks. She has lost 35 pounds or 14.23%

Michelle
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 6
A 26-year old aspiring aviation engineer from Dallas, Texas. She has a beautiful smile and a personality to match. She looks forward to taking off enough weight to take charge of her life.

I’m glad she decided to stay, and I hope she continues to do well. She has lost 33 pounds or 13.64%

Colleen
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 5
A 23-year old receptionist from Cleveland, Ohio. She’s a cute but formidable opponent who has struggled with her weight since her teens. She wants to be more active and have a healthier life

She’s also one of my favorites, and I am enjoying her success. I hope she sticks around for a while. She has now lost 31 pounds, or 13.3%

Renee
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: 4
A 46-year old event planner from Dallas, Texas. She’s just as lovely as daughter Michelle, although she worries about the effects of her weight on her new marriage. She wants to travel to Hawaii after she loses some weight.

She’s a sweetie, but she almost went home this week. I hope she and Michelle have some more time together. She has now lost 35 pounds or 13.11%

Heba
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: 10
A sales representative from Raleigh, North Carolina. It’s easy to like Heba. Her bubbly personality and determination make her fun to watch. She really wants to have a child someday, and knows that better health would be helpful.

Heba had a big loss this week and I am glad to see her success, but she made a spiteful decision that may yet come back to haunt her. She still has the lowest percentage of weight loss, so it’s a good thing that her team won this week. She has lost 36 pounds, or 12.25%.

Shellay
5th Elimination
A 51-year old stay-at-home mom from Royal Oaks, Michigan. She hopes to enter the job market, and wants to prove that she can lose the necessary weight.

I was sorry to see her go home, but WOW she looked amazing in her transformation video! So glad she kept up her weight loss and it will be wonderful to see her at the finale. She lost 27 pounds, which is 12.5%.

Ed
4th Elimination
A chef from Raleigh, North Carolina. Cooking delicious food all day doesn’t help in his quest to lose weight, but he and Heba would like to have a family, so he’s hoping a weight loss will be the key to better health.

What a beautiful speech he made to Heba. What a sweet thing to see his sincere feelings for her. He’s done so well at home; I am looking forward to seeing him at the finale.

Jerry
3rd Elmination
A 51-year old police sergeant from Cleveland, Ohio. We already know he is the “sickest contestant”, so I have to give him kudos for however long he and Colleen make it through the game.

I will miss Jerry and seeing his relationship with Coleen, but for his sake it was best for him to go home. If you saw the transformation video, you know Jerry’s doing great now! On the show he lost 17 pounds, or 4.43 %

Tom
2nd Elimination
A 42-year old cab driver from Everett, Massachusetts. He sits in a cab all day, so it’s tough to keep the weight off. He wants to find more time and energy to spend with his family.

Tom did a great job while he was at the Ranch. He began at 314 lost 8.59% before he was eliminated.

LT
1st Elimination
A 23-year old cab driver from Everett, Massachusetts. He works with his dad in the taxi, and has copied some of dad’s bad food habits.

L.T. tried his best, but the curse of Week Two caused him to gain weight. He began at 357 and lost 4.2%
Now that we’re down to teams in the game, it should be interesting to see how it effects future eliminations. The girls are gaining, and I’m beginning to wonder if we’ll have an all-female finale. Next week will get us one week closer to finding out.
