Canadian Idol: Top Six Week - Country Music Is Still Alive
Recap by Jon Dos
August 8, 2007
Next is Carly Rae Jepsen. We learn that Maroon 5 debuted around the time of Carly's first boyfriend so Maroon has a place in her heart. Her question for Maroon 5 is: when it comes to artistic choices, how do they come to a final decision. It's all about getting a good manager and not stressing about it. Creatively, you need to stay on top and remain rational.

Carly is singing "Come to My Window" by Melissa Etheridge. I think it's a pretty good performance but considering the night we are having so far, anything will do. She does hit a money note in the middle and it's actually hideous. Other than that, it's the best of the night so far.

Zack: It wasn't as bad as the others but Zack has no idea why Carly chose that song.

Jake: Jake was concerned with the song choice and didn't know how it would translate. However, what Carly did was smart. She took the song and did it the Carly Rae way.

Farley: Farley thinks Carly has the strongest sense of "self." Carly took a signature vocalist's interpretation and turned it into Carly Rae.

Sass: Sass thinks this is the best version she has heard of this song.

Hoping to turn things around is Brian Melo. Brian is looking forward to singing pop/rock because this is right up his alley. His question for Maroon 5 is: how do they maintain the emotion of a song when they sing it everyday. Adam says, at this point, the meaning doesn't mean anything. What means a lot are the people and their response. You need to refocus the energy off them and feed off it. Oh look, I'm in Brian's video package too!

Brian is performing "When Dolphins Cry" by Live. This is what it is all about! Brian knows how to tap into the emotion of the song and gradually builds throughout the song. The band is really into it and actually looks like they belong with Brian. The band really feels it and so do I.

Jake: Jake remembers when Brian auditioned and Jake thought Brian could go all the way. Although Brian fell a bit during the Top 22, Brian has been on an upward rise since then. Brian picks the right songs, hits the right notes, and performs with emotion. Brian's got it all.

Farley: Farley thinks Brian has an honest and strong sense of performance. Brian brings the drama and feel, and is "Melo-dramatic."

Sass: Sass thinks Brian made an excellent song choice. Brian was confident, sang with emotion, and most of all, was inspiring.

Zack: Zack attempts to pull a Farley and suggests Brian wasn't "Melo-mellow," which doesn't quite match Farley's wit. Zach adds that Brian gave the only real performance of the night.

Closing the show is Dwight d'Eon. Dwight is really excited because he admires Maroon 5 for their distinct sound. His question for Maroon 5 is: what part of the business surprises them the most? James says that it's been more about promotion and marketing than playing music. Adam welcomes Dwight to a "new type of hell!"

Dwight returns to the Rob Thomas route by accompanying himself on the guitar to "Smooth" by Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas. I guess this is one of Dwight's better efforts but it just shows that Rob Thomas is what Dwight is mostly capable of. Dwight adds a guitar solo at the end. If only his singing matched his guitar playing.

Farley: Farley really enjoyed Dwight's performance. There were points where Dwight was off but overall, it was a definite plus.

Sass: sass is glad Dwight had a guitar. Sass found it cool that it was a bit of a production. However, the singing was the usual...

Zack: Zack thought Dwight was cool. The vibe didn't come off as Rob Thomas, it was Dwight. If Dwight is here next week, the east coast finally got something right.

Jake: Jake agrees with Sass that the vocals weren't strong but agrees with Farley in the performance aspect. Jake wants to see more "taste" guitar playing from Dwight.

Tonight featured of my favourite bands and unfortunately, the Idols didn't really live up to the theme. In a way, this theme was kind of a free week for everyone but only Brian brought his A-game, which probably means he's going home. The results have been ridiculous this far so I'm going to base my predictions the same way. I think Jaydee will join Brian in the bottom, only because I was in both their video clips and we all know I'm bad luck. The third person will be Dwight. If you recall, Josh Palmer performed last during the Top 6 theme and gave a guitar solo. On results night, Josh was eliminated. Will Dwight follow the same fate? Brian is my remaining favourite in this competition. Canada, I hope you remember our deal. Tomorrow Maroon 5 will be performance not once, but twice, and I am really looking forward to it.

The Results Show
The Idols open the show performing "All for Love" by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. The Idols perform in duos: Dwight and Brian, Carly and Jaydee, Matt and Tara. The harmonies aren't that great and no one stands out in my opinion.

Here comes Ben, telling us Canada responded last night to 3.1 million votes. We say hello to our judges and are reminded of the performances coming up from Maroon 5 and of last night's show.

Finally it's time from Maroon 5 to perform First up they'll be performing "Wake Up Call." There isn't as much energy I know they're capable of giving. Vocally, it's still strong.

Ben joins Adam Levine on stage and mentions the Canada is like a home to them and when will they be back. They'll be in Toronto performing at the Air Canada Centre on October 4, 2007, and if anyone wants to give me tickets, that'd be greatly appreciated. I spent the weekend trying to win tickets from my local radio station but all the winners happened to be from Hamilton. Hm, is this a sign?

Maroon 5 performs a second song tonight, "Makes Me Wonder" and makes up for the energy that was lacking in the first performance. I really enjoyed both their performances and if anyone of you get the chance to see them live, you'll know what I'm talking about.

No filler this week so let's get on with the results. Matt and Carly are up first and Carly is the first person in this week's bottom 3. Jaydee and Dwight are next, and Jaydee is safe, and Dwight is in the bottom 3. Finally, Brian and Tara learn their fates and the final member of the bottom 3 is Tara, which means Brian is safe! Thank you Canada!

Sass gives us her take of this weeks result. She is surprised every week but she understands why two of them are in the bottom.

Farley is put in the hot seat and is asked who he thinks is going home. What Carly does is not necessarily appreciated by Canada, which leads Farley to think Carly will be leaving. However, it has nothing to do with lack of talent.

Zack is given a chance to address the voting public. Zack thinks regional voting is overrated. Someone has to do something that will make people go "Wow!" This will make you stay, otherwise you'll be at risk.

Finally, Jake is asked what it takes to win. Someone better step up and show they want to win. No one has shown that except Brian.

After our last commercial, Ben announces, "Canada voted, The Idol who won't be here next week is Tara." Cue the farewell video! In Tara's video, she sends a huge thank you to Canada for making her dream come true. She is thankful for being allowed to show what she can do and hopes to see everyone soon.

Before Tara sings us off, she thanks Canada and Newfoundland, and mentions she loves them. And then adds that "country music is still alive!"

My losing streak has officially ended although I wouldn't have minded Tara making it next week. All that matters is that Brian is safe so I guess I'm satisfied with this weeks result.

Next week is "My Own Idol" where the Top 5 will sing songs from artists who inspire them. The original Idol Kelly Clarkson will be next week's special guest. It should be a good show and I will see you all then.
