Canadian Idol: Top Seven Week - No Time For Losers
Recap by Jon Dos

The Performance Show
Last week on Canadian Idol, the Idols went "Unplugged" with the guidance of Enrique Iglesias. Martha Joy and Matt Rapley were called to centre stage on results night, and I lost another one of my favourites. Will Brian or Greg quickly follow in their footsteps? Let's hope not!
Ben comes out to a darkly lit theatre with members in the audience waving glow sticks around. What's the occasion you may be wonder? Tonight we are celebrating "The Music of Queen!" Before we say hello to our judges, Ben informs us that according to a BBC poll, Queen is the greatest British band of all time.
We start with Jake giving us a history lesson on Queen and what makes the music of Queen important. Queen has been around for a long time. They formed in 1971, released their first record in 1973 and were headliners for Live Aid in 1985 (Jake mistakenly lists the year as 1986). And Freddie Mercury is possibly the greatest rock and roll singer of all time.
With the music of Queen being iconic, Farley is asked how the seven Idols are going to add their own interpretation. Farley agrees the music of Queen is iconic in its sound and feel. The Idols need to think about their purpose, which is to entertain and have fun.
The first three singers we have said goodbye so far to have all been women. Is there a meaning behind this? Sass doesn't think it's a gender issue. It's about Canada's perception as to who is going to be the best Idol.
Zack is called out for being full of hugs last week so what's it going to take to impress him this week. Zack denies all of this and mentions that the "kids better rock!"
This week, the Idols were mentored by Brian May and Roger Taylor and the videos will feature them coaching the Idols. On that note, Ben rolls the clip of our guests. According to the Guinness Book of Records, they have spent the most time on the UK album charts than any other band. They've sold 200 million records worldwide. Everyone suffered a huge loss in 1991 with Freddie Mercury's passing but in 2005, Brian May and Roger Taylor collaborated with Paul Rogers.
Hey look, there's Erica Peck in the audience! Idol fans will know she barely made the cut back in season two but she's one of the stars in "We Will Rock You." Hm, maybe our special performance will feature her and the rest of the cast?
The videos preceding the Idols' performances are courtesy of Enrique Iglesias coaching the Idols. As usual, we get an introductory video of our guest. Some quick interesting tidbits include that Enrique is the biggest selling Spanish speaking artist with 16 number one hits! He can sing in five languages (the same as Martha Joy) and has sold more than 40 million records. Impressive!
Our first performer tonight is Brian Melo. Brian is a huge fan and meeting Queen is a dream come true. May and Taylor were intrigued to see if Brian would be able to attach the certain emotion needed for his song. May is moved and got lost in the song. Brian's phrasing is great and nails the chorus. Overall, they are impressed with Brian.
Brian Melo has chosen "Too Much Love Will Kill You." Brian takes on a different approach this week, showcasing his softer side. The song gradually builds in intensity and Brian nails it effortlessly. This is a great way to start the show and I think this is Brian's best performance.
Jake: Jake was completely moved by this performance. Brian is definitely now in the competition.
Farley: Farley agrees with Jake. Brian gave a credible performance. The transitions from soft tones to brass tones were seamless and really well done.
Sass: Brian chose a really powerful emotional song and did it justice. In particular, Sass liked the juxtaposition between the rough and soft tones.
Zack: Zack believed in the emotional context of the song but pitch wise, it was "sketchy all over the place."
Next up, is Greg Neufeld. May and Taylor think Greg has a beautiful voice. They like Greg's interpretation because he brings it from the soul. They could listen to Greg all night.
