Canadian Idol: Top Seven Week - No Time For Losers
Recap by Jon Dos
August 8, 2007
Greg is taking on "We Are The Champions." In the video clip, Greg sounded great with the song but the performance he gives is runnier than a little boy without a Kleenex. He throws in too many "ooh's" and "yeah's" and it really takes away from the song. The audience obviously felt Greg during the performance and I doubt he's going anywhere soon.
Farley: There is no question that Greg has a sense of athleticism when he performs. He rises to the occasion every single time and
Farley really respects that.
Sass: Greg is the definition of a real singer. However, he got one word wrong; it's "YOU are the champion."
Zack: Greg was just short intensity-wise. Note-wise, Greg just didn't "really rip into it."
Jake: Jake addresses Zack and doesn't believe what Zack has to say because earlier in the season, he made comments about not caring about bad notes but here he is pointing out bad notes from Brian. With that out of the way, Jake thinks the Gavin DeGraw version of the song was perfect for Greg and did have fantastic job.
Carly Rae Jepsen is next. Carly is excited and wanted to do something extreme. Vocally, the music of Queen is challenging but that's the beauty of it. May and Taylor are stunned by Carly. They think she is irresistible and has a "twinkle." You can't want her perform and not smile.
Carly will be performing "Killer Queen." It's a very cutesy, Broadway performance. I can't help but think about Steffi D from last season. They're not exactly similar but I do think that Carly has a place in musical theatre opposed to being the next big pop star. As ridiculous as this may sound, I think Carly will land in the bottom 3 (that is, if we go back to narrowing it down to three).
Sass: Sass is almost speechless. Carly gave the "gutsiest, ballsiest, most unbelievable" performance.
Zack: Carly gave put her own vibe and own thing to her performance. She is "completely distinct" and no one is in the same leagues as her for being unique.
Jake: Jake loves Carly's look and how she took the cabaret side of Queen and accentuated it. This is her world and she was fabulous.
Farley: Without question, Carly used the stage to the best of her abilities. She understands how to entertain and did what she felt like doing. This is what people want to see and she is showing people who she is deep down inside.
Up next is Matt Rapley. Matt will take whatever comes out of May and Taylor's mouths considering their 40 year career, even if it's just the word "the." May and Taylor think Matt has a wonderful voice. There's a power and stature in Matt's voice which he does so seemingly without effort. Matt needs to be careful when he "wiggles" the notes, because he needs to know where he's headed. They don't think Matt has reached his full potential yet but he's on a journey of discovery.
Matt will be singing "Under Pressure." He starts off really strong but he loses me at one point during the bridge. After that, it just goes downhill for me, to the point I don't even recognize the song! Uh oh, could this spell the end of Matt?
Zack: Zack thought has Matt went along, he his some strong moments.
Jake: There were moments Matt was drowned out by the background vocalists. Jake thinks Matt brought the passion he brought during "Whipping Post" and thinks his performance will sound better at home.
Farley: Farley also likes how Matt took it back to where he was with "Whipping Post" and that is his mark. There was something acoustically that Farley had difficulty grabbing on to but from what he heard, he enjoyed it.
Sass: Sass thinks Matt did a fantastic job for a challenging song and killed it.
Next on board is Dwight d'Eon. May and Taylor think Dwight has a fantastic voice and hits the notes nice and clean. Dwight should, however, try and get a lot more of the tune of the song because it's an easy song to shout. The guitar issue is brought up but May and Taylor think Dwight as the front man suits him.
Dwight has chosen "Tie Your Mother Down." Dwight starts off on top of one of the speakers and proceeds to make his way through the audience. It's a very energetic and powerful performance, and one of Dwight's better efforts in awhile. Dwight clearly has a following so I don't think he's in that much danger.
Jake: Jake rates Dwight, performance 10, vocals 7. Dwight did light it up and Jake thinks this was the perfect song.
Farley: What Farley really likes about Dwight is that he puts his heart into everything which is critical. Farley is a big fan of the physical performance.
Sass: Sass also thinks this was the perfect song for Dwight. It was "part stadium, part theatre."
Zack: "You're back to being a contender."
Will Tara Oram give a performance with just as much energy? May and Taylor actually think Tara has a rock edge the suits her voice. She does need to work on her breathing though. She has a tendency to push from her through. They do acknowledge that Tara sang the song the way it should be sung.
Tara will be performing "Headlong." I've been hard on Tara but she is really growing each week. The great thing about this performance is that Tara made it her own. If no one were to tell me who sang this song, I wouldn't think it was a Queen performance, I would dub it a Tara performance.
Farley: Tara gave one of her best performances. This is the most ready and professional Tara has been.
Sass: Tara is a born performer and injects every performance with so much energy. Sass doesn't care how Tara sings, she just loves watching Tara.
Zack: Zack notes that Tara kept some country poses here and there. Tara ran out of pipes because of the energy level but she sang the hell out of it.
Jake: Jake thinks Tara looks great. She gave a really physical performance. She commanded the stage, especially when she walked out and looked everyone in the eye. Tara brought something else to watch and was really special.
