Canadian Idol: "Eight Is More Than Enough"
Recap by Jon Dos
July 31, 2007
Last week on Canadian Idol, the Idols delivered one of the best performance shows ever on the Canadian Idol stage. It was anyone's guess as to who would land in the bottom but it ended up being three of my favourites, Martha, Brian, and Khalila. Either way, I was going to lose a favourite; unfortunately, it was Khalila's time that was up.

Ben welcomes us back to the John Bassett Theatre. Tonight is a little bit different though. Not only is Orin Isaacs and the band on the stage, there are a number of couches on the stage, in an attempt to capture the intimacy of the "Unplugged" theme. Not only that, Ben has a giant bandage around his thumb. He advises everyone at home, "Knives are sharp! You play safe kids!" On that note, let's check in with our judges.

Jake talks a lot about emotion so is he expecting goose bumps tonight? One can only hope. Last week, he said he was expecting "intense emotion" and hopes the Idols deliver. This is a perfect opportunity.

Sass has experience playing unplugged so does she have any advice? Going unplugged has the same technical approach, but there is more of a storytelling element.

Ben wants Farley to set the table with a pun. Farley says the Idols need to "supply their own power" and that "eight is more than enough." Brilliant!

Finally, Zack is asked if he ever went unplugged. He jokes that electricity wasn't discovered yet so he used that opportunity to show his soft and sensitive side.

The videos preceding the Idols' performances are courtesy of Enrique Iglesias coaching the Idols. As usual, we get an introductory video of our guest. Some quick interesting tidbits include that Enrique is the biggest selling Spanish speaking artist with 16 number one hits! He can sing in five languages (the same as Martha Joy) and has sold more than 40 million records. Impressive!

Speaking of Martha Joy, she is up first. Enrique points out that Martha has a big voice for someone 16 years old. Imagine what she's like when she's 25, she can conquer the world. Enrique knows that Martha is nervous but she doesn't show it. Martha's approach tonight is going to be the same as how she sang in front of Enrique.

Martha Joy has chosen "True Colours" by Cyndi Lauper, but taking on the Lea Salonga version. What is happening to you Martha? You are losing your touch. This is two weeks in a row. I normally enjoy Martha's artistic choices and how she makes the songs her own, but I wished she stayed true to the original. I really don't think she meshed with the band well.

Jake: Jake thought Martha chose the right interpretation for her voice and the song. Martha hit the right notes but Jake is still not feeling her.

Farley: Farley realizes that we need to accept the singer Martha is. Martha sings technically well. Her interpretation was solid and she did a great job.

Sass: Sass agrees and thinks Martha did a really good job in her style of the song.

Zack: Zack points out the horrific note in the middle which he describes as "hair-raising-ly bad." He agrees with Farley that we need to accept who Martha is and what she does. He goes on to call Martha "the Little Mermaid."

Up next, is Dwight d'Eon. Dwight has chosen one of Enrique's top five songs and knows it a tough song to sing. Enrique thinks Dwight sang great and didn't think of the Police when Dwight sang. Enrique feels Dwight has lived life more and you can hear it in Dwight's voice. Hm, I'm not so sure about that Enrique.

The Police song Dwight has chosen is "Every Breath You Take" and he is accompanying himself on the guitar. All I can say is, "ouch!" We already know that Dwight doesn't have the best technical voice. By going acoustic, it really shows how weak of a singer he is and just doesn't do him any favours.

Farley: Farley applauds Dwight for his interpretation and agrees with Enrique that Dwight doesn't sound like the Police. Farley doesn't think Dwight was hot enough to call the fire department. Parts of it were good, but parts of it were cool.

Sass: It wasn't the greatest singing but Sass appreciates how Dwight changed the arrangement and melody.

Zack: Zack had a vision of Dwight winning but it is slowly fading away.

Jake: Jake thought Dwight's stylistic choices were really good. There were a couple of bad notes, but Dwight got into the song emotionally, and Jake felt it.

Hoping to change things around is Jaydee Bixby.....
