Canadian Idol: "Eight Is More Than Enough"
Recap by Jon Dos
July 31, 2007
Hoping to change things around is Jaydee Bixby. Enrique can't believe Jaydee is only 16. Enrique finds Jaydee to be innocent, but real, and not trying to be cool. Enrique finds out Jaydee likes country but wants Jaydee to give it a rough edge.

Jaydee goes for Green Day's "Time of Your Life" and whips out the "twang" with this performance. It's very forced and it seems more like an impersonation, than a Jaydee performance. Everything about this performance comes off as very phony and it just combines all the things I didn't like about Jaydee to begin with. And I was beginning to like Jaydee!

Sass: Sass thinks Jaydee was unpredictable in his arrangement and approach. She found it cool because this is exactly what Jaydee does.

Zack: Zack finds it "patently dishonest to twang if you're not from Texas or Arkansas." Jaydee chimes in that he's from Alberta, which Zack responds that Albertans do not twang. Overall, Zack thought Jaydee was awful.

Jake: Jake's problem was that he didn't feel Jaydee was honest. Jake didn't feel Jaydee, therefore didn't believe Jaydee as well.

Farley: Farley thinks the issue was that Jaydee was trying to diversify himself. Jaydee should stick to who he is and his roots. This performance exposed Jaydee's flaws which he normally wouldn't have done.

Will Tara Oram continue this streak of poor performances? Enrique was blown away by Tara in rehearsals. Tara sings with innocence and purity. Enrique is captivated because it's like Tara wrote the song. Tara has nice things to say about Enrique too. Tara thinks Enrique is the boy next door and makes her feel welcome.

Tara is taking on "Heaven" by Bryan Adams. Tara comes out barefoot. It's not relevant to her performance but I felt it was worth mentioning. I've been hard on Tara but I think she sounds great tonight. I even think this tops her performance last week. It's an honest performance and a very believable one as well.

Zack: Tara started strong but fell apart into really "sketchy moments." Tara's presence was strong but her singing was like "naked cruelty."

Jake: Jake thought Tara gave an honest performance but didn't hit all the notes. There were a lot of shaky moments. Tara meant it but didn't sing great.

Farley: This was a wonderful opportunity to show control but Tara didn't have the control the song needs.

Sass: Sass thought Tara had a great note at the end that made it all better for Sass.

Next up is Brian Melo. Brian found it mind blowing to be in the same room as Enrique. Enrique points out that singing is the easy part but you need to believe in what you do. Before I get to Brian's performance, I finally found out what I really like about Brian. He reminds me of Melinda Doolittle in a way. There's just the humble attitude and shy confidence both of them possess and when they're on the stage, they just explode.

After being in the bottom 3, Brian is going to prove he belongs on the stage with the Black Crowes' "She Talks to Angels." I think Brian does things on stage that Dwight really needs to work on. Technically, they both don't have the strongest voices but Brian makes it work for him. This is another great performance by Brian, and I'm really looking forward to listening to his original material after this competition.

Jake: Brian is the first person to know what it means to be intense. Brian gave a spectacular performance and Jake liked it way better than the Black Crowes!

Farley: Brian brought what Farley mentioned earlier tonight, which was to supply your own power. The intensity was there and Brian gave a fantastic performance.
Sass: Brian is the first person that Sass was happy she didn't have ear plugs for.

Zack: Zack points out that Brian used the "flaws" in his voice as virtues. Killer!

Next on board is Matt Rapley. Enrique thinks Matt has the rhythm, voice and the passion. However, Matt needs to feel the anger and pain. Matt has the voice and can do whatever he wants, but he needs to stop being too nice!

Matt will be singing "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. This is the Matt that I liked! If I have any say in his future, more performances like this! He does lose his breath at one point but he's able to recover quickly.

Farley: Matt has a beautiful voice but would've been much better if he showed some grit and character. Farley wants Matt to "slam harder."

Sass: Sass thinks Matt was "absolutely gorgeous" and his performance was like a spiritual.

Zack: Zack is pissed off because Matt is probably the most gifted vocalist and Matt wimped out. You need to have guts, dig deep, and go all the way.

Jake: This was the perfect opportunity for Matt to kill the notes but he didn't do it.

Up next is Carly Rae Jepsen. Carly fell in love with Enrique but wasn't in love with him before she saw his brown eyes. Enrique thinks Carly has a gift where people can close their eyes and they'll only need to hear 10 seconds of her singing to be sold.

Carly's singing "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia. Carly starts off with just piano accompanying her and the rest of the band later joins in. I think this is Carly's best performance. Everything about this performance captures the emotion and vulnerability to her. Greg better watch out!

Sass: "Beautiful, unforgettable, vulnerable, wonderful."

Zack: Zack calls Carly "singular" and is instantly identifiable. Carly is a true contender and was fantastic.

Jake: Jake loves the start of the song; it was stripped and allowed us to hear her voice. Jake's head and arms a tingling, and finally got goose bumps.

Farley: The only problem with Jake getting goose bumps is that it means Jake moves closer to Farley. Ha! Carly is accurate with her interpretation and is raw and beautiful material.

Last up tonight is Greg Neufeld. Greg was really nervous but Enrique ended up being funny and down to earth. Enrique's only advice to Greg is to not over think it. Greg has a unique voice and people will be convinced the second he belts out. Enrique actually wishes he had Greg's voice!

Greg is singing "I'm Ready" by another one of my favourite artists, Bryan Adams. I actually had a feeling he might go with Bryan Adams but I thought he was going to go for "Back to You." This is another spectacular performance from Greg. I'm beginning to run out of superlatives for him! Once again, Greg is the best of the night.

Zack: Tonight might be the only night that nobody is in Greg's league. And out of nowhere, Zack runs up on the stage to hug Greg!

Jake: "Fantastic performance. You have it all"

Farley: What Farley really likes about Greg is that regardless of the song, there isn't any contrivance. Greg closes and opens his eyes, and bends his knees at the right time. Greg gave a natural, organic performance.

Sass: There was a right amount of passion, integrity, and intensity. Greg sang in tune and is the overall package.

This was a disappointing week but things picked up at halftime when Brian took the stage. The top spots easily go to Greg, followed by Carly, then Brian. Matt and Tara follow. And in my bottom 3 are Martha, Jaydee, and Dwight. I think Jaydee has enough support to keep him safe, so I'm going to switch Jaydee with Matt, in terms of what will actually happen. This week, will finally be the week Dwight will be saying goodbye.

For the record, CTV thanked me for voting for competitors' number one, five, and eight (Martha, Brian, and Greg). Who did CTV thank you for voting for?

Will my streak in losing favourites continue? It better not but we'll find out for sure tomorrow night. And Enrique Iglesias will be performing not once, but twice tomorrow night. Join me tomorrow night for all the action.
