Canadian Idol: The Top Nine Perform
Recap by Jon Dos
July 24, 2007
Next up is Matt Rapley. He has chosen "Whipping Post," the same song the separated Bo Bice from the pack, but will Matt have the same success? For the second week in a row, I don't feel like we are seeing the Matt we have gotten to know. Once again, he sounds like someone completely different. There's more of a growl and some angst in his voice and I just don't think it suits him. Hey look, Mila is also in the audience showing some love for the Idols. She would've absolutely shined this week.

Sass: "Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Zack!"

Zack: "This is a whole new game kids and Matt Rapley came to play"

Jake: Last week in Matt's video clip, we were shown of him singing gospel. This is what Matt did this week and it blew Jake's mind.

Farley: Matt gave a phenomenal performance. Tonight, everyone is stepping up and entering the competition.

Dwight d'Eon decides to show some off the vocals with "Undone" by the Guess Who. I am not feeling this performance. It's more of a vocal presentation but he doesn't quite measure up. There just isn't anything unique about this performance. I think this will be the end of his journey.

Zack: Dwight sang well and was cool. Zack, however, wants to see Dwight push further and sweat.

Jake: This was a good opportunity for Dwight to show melody and we saw a bit of it. Dwight was pitchy at times but brought it home at the end.

Farley: Farley is in between Zack and Jake but would rather see Dwight push hard and use physicality whether it's his passion or true grit.

Sass: This was the best singing and most in tune we have ever seen Dwight. Sass adds, "That was dope!"

Next up is Carly Rae Jepsen and goes for Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind." I immediately think, uh-oh. This is not the case though. Carly is back and gives what I think is the best we've seen her. She puts her own touch to the song and instead of butchering this classic, it actually works! I guess landing in the bottom 3 was enough to make her fight harder. This is the best of the night so far.

Jake: Jake liked that he saw range, stylistic ability, and more importantly, the vulnerability which he loves about Carly.

Farley: Farley says that Carly's voluntary or involuntary movement is reminiscent to what he liked about Theresa Sokyrka. The music makes Carly do what she does and she lets it. It's really touching and really well done.

Sass: Sass finds Carly's intriguing stylistic choices enjoyable and thinks she might be establishing a signature style.

Zack: Zack notes that Carly didn't sing it like the people who normally blast songs. Some notes were not "killed" but she is one of two people he would instantly recognize on the radio.

Brian Melo will be singing "Bold as Love" by Jimi Hendrix, recently covered by John Mayer. Brian is one of my favourites and I've enjoyed all of her performances so far. This performance, however, doesn't do it for me. I'm not sure what it is but I'm really disappointed in him this week. I think we'll be seeing Brian in the bottom 3.

Farley: What Farley really liked about Brian's performance is that his phrasing was "immaculate." Farley really enjoyed Brian's confidence and use of the stage. Overall, it was a solid and confident performance.

Sass: Brian gave an excellent performance and Sass really enjoyed it.

Zack: Zack thinks it's a good thing that only one person will be leaving tomorrow because everyone is stepping up. As for Brian, this was the first time Zack bought him.

Jake: Jake thinks we have a show tonight! There have been a lot of firsts tonight and for Brian, this is also his best performance.

Up next is Khalila Glanville and her song choice for tonight is Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman." Once again, I immediately think, uh-oh. And just like Carly, it's not the case. I really enjoy Khalila's laid back approach to the song (Zack later addresses the purpose). She does throw in the big notes and overall, it's a really strong performance. The best performance of the night now goes to Khalila.

Sass: You are definitely not disappointing us tonight. That was fantastic and also your best performance.

Zack: There were some moments where Zack wanted more. He realizes that when Khalila holds back, it's for artistic reasons. He is thrilled to have had her in the competition.

Jake: It's a tough song and has been covered by many people but Khalila lived up to it, if not better.

Farley: Khalila made Farley feel like a natural man. He finds Khalila mature and makes astute song choices. She was "black velvet."

Greg Neufeld is up next and goes for Johnny Cash's "Long Black Veil." This is a more relaxed and reserved performance and definitely an improvement from last week. I find this performance soothing and refreshing. His approach is similar to Khalila's but I stand corrected and now give the honour of the best performance of the night to Greg.

Zack: Zack guesses it might come off better on TV. Greg sounded uptight and was not in the pocket. Luckily for Greg, he's Canada's next top model so it doesn't matter what Zack thinks. Ha!

Jake: Jake disagrees with Zack. Greg was so smooth, calm and together. Greg showed his ability to be a pro and that is what he is.

Farley: Farley was really comfortable with Greg's interpretation. Greg had a sense of what he wanted to do and it came out smoothly.

Sass: "You sang gorgeous, and you are gorgeous."

Last but definitely not least, is Martha Joy. She has chosen "Love Child" by Diana Ross. I was really disappointed in Martha's song choice. She sings the song well but I don't think this song suits Martha at all. It was a lively performance but it just wasn't my taste.

Jake: Jake doesn't think Martha should be singing these types of songs. Martha was not in the pocket and she doesn't know how to groove. It did not work for him.

Farley: It's a tough song to sing and Farley can't tell Martha what he thinks.

Sass: Sass thinks this was also a personal best for Martha. It was the most energetic performance she gave so far.

Zack: Zack thinks Martha was "stiff as hell" and to some extent, it was because she had trouble hearing the pocket. He does disagree with Jake, and thinks this song is the type of song she should sing. Finally, he wishes Martha luck.

This week was definitely a major improvement from last week's mess. After slipping last week, the top 3 spots go to Greg, Khalila, and Carly, in that order. I disagree with the judges and would put Jaydee fourth. Not too far behind are Brian and Martha. In the bottom are Tara, Matt, and Dwight.

It's really tough to predict this week but after last week's all female bottom 3, I think we might be in for an all male bottom 3 and possibly a shocking elimination. Carly and Greg are back and reminding us why everyone fell in love with them in the first place. I think Canada is sold on Jaydee and Martha, and Newfoundland won't disappoint Tara. That leaves Matt, and repeat offenders Brian, Dwight and Khalila. If we're in for a shock this week, I think Khalila will be the victim. She came back fighting after her visit to the bottom 3 and should rightfully be safe this week. I think Canada will smarten up and keep her safe. I'm going to stick with my guy and predict the bottom 3 will be Brian, Dwight, and Matt, with Dwight saying goodbye.

How do you predict a week like this week? I want to hear what you think and what your predictions are. Brownie points to anyone who accurately predicts the correct bottom 3 and fallen Idol. We'll find all of this out tomorrow and I'll be here to cover it.
