Dancing With The Stars: Ladies Shine As 5th Season Opens
Episode 1 Recap by Jenny Lane
September 25, 2007
Dancing with the Stars kicks off the fifth season tonight with a slightly different format.

There will be two nights of dancing, followed by a results show. That means we're in for three nights - which I have to admit is a pretty big time commitment!

Tonight, the women celebrities start things off with the Foxtrot or the Cha Cha Cha.

Tomorrow we'll see the men dance.

On Wednesday, the team with the lowest combined judges' scores and viewers' votes will be eliminated from the competition.

Here's a rundown of the celebrities we'll see tonight, and their partners:

  • Melanie Brown, who calls herself "Mel B" - Her claim to fame is as "Scary Spice" of the enormously popular 90's group the "Spice Girls." She's reuniting with her fellow spice-etts this winter for a world tour, so this show will give help her get back into shape, practice her dance moves, and give the group some free publicity. She's partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who is quite a hunk, despite his impossible to spell last name.
  • Sabrina Bryan - I didn't recognize her at first, but when I read that she used to be a member of "The Cheetah Girls," well I still didn't recognize her. Apparently it was a hit movie which translated into musical success for the girls who made up the group in the movie. She's partnered with newcomer to the show, Mark Ballas.
  • Jennie Garth - No matter how much time goes by, she'll always be Kelly from "Beverly Hills 90210." Fellow 90210er Steve (Ian Ziering) was on last season's show, so maybe next season we'll get to see Brandon or Dylan? She's now proudest of her roles as wife and mother of three girls. Jennie is partnered with newcomer Derek Hough, a rather petite blonde, who is Julianne Hough's brother.
  • Josie Maran - Model/Actress and former Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, she's now an entrepreneur, activist and new mom. She started a new "eponymous eco-chic" cosmetics line and is spokesperson for the organization "Global Green." She's partnered with Alec Mazo, who was the season one champion but was also the first to be eliminated on another season.
  • Marie Osmond - Who doesn't smile when they think of cute and adorable "Donny and Marie?" Of course she's all grown up now, and is now a successful entrepreneur with her successful line of dolls. She's also the co-founder of the "Children's Miracle Network." She says she's doing this to tell women who are "over 45, single and with lots of kids" not to give up. She's partnered with Jonathan Roberts, who is back for his fourth season.
  • Jane Seymour - Emmy and Golden Globe award winner, she wants to also be known as an artist, author, activist and designer. She was a Bond girl, starred in the very popular series, "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and has been on countless mini-series and made for TV movies. She's partnered with Tony Dovolani, who returns for his fourth season.

Joining our host Tom Bergeron tonight is former Dancing with the Stars champion, Drew Lachey. Drew is filling in for Samantha, who delivered a baby girl yesterday!

Up first are all of the professional dancers, dancing to a song that might be called "Dancing Fool" but I'm not sure. The guys are all in black pants and suspenders, and white shirts. The girls are wearing a variety of tiny red dresses, all with fringe, sequins, and very little material.

After we get our first look at all of the contestants, it's time for our first couple to dance! Jennie and Derek have the difficult task of going first. In their taped piece, we see the two meet for the first time. Jennie says "well aren't you a cute little thing!" when she sees Derek, which can hardly be taken as a compliment. Speaking of looks, Jennie looks fantastic. She still looks like she did on 90210, which I find amazing, especially given that she's bouncing a baby on her lap! Derek tells us that he was a bit starstruck, because he "used to watch 90210 all the time."
