Dancing With The Stars: A Night Of Perfection Episode 18 Recap by Jenny Lane November 20, 2007
Last week on Dancing with the Stars, we lost Cameron and Edyta, much to my surprise. We're now down to the semi-finalists - Marie, Mel, Jennie and Helio. If I'd have predicted the final four a few weeks ago, I never would have included two, or maybe even three of them.
Before we get to this week's performances, I need to thank Travis for writing last week's recap while I was tossing my money at the slot machines in Las Vegas! On my flight to Vegas, I read in a magazine that former contestant Samantha and her former partner Mark are an item. Isn't he quite a bit older than she is? The same article said that Mario Lopez and his former partner Karina are also still together.
That reminds me, I saw Marie Osmond and her brother Donny on Larry King, and my opinion of her is beginning to change (positive to negative). She was talking about how her teenage son has gone into rehab and how tough things have been on her lately. Now I completely get that her father dying is tragic and affected her to no end, but to go on Larry King to talk about your young son going into rehab on the same week that you're hoping to get to the semifinals of the show? Maybe I'm cynical, but it just seems a little too coincidental to me. I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt with the fainting (she's an actress after all) and even the Oprah spectacle, but now I'm beginning to wonder.
Now, on with the show! Tonight we begin with the ballroom round, and Marie and Jonathan. Last week, Marie and Jonathan's Jive wasn't a hit with the judges and they put her at the bottom of the pack. However, her fans (and Larry King watchers) rallied and kept her in the competition. This week, they're dancing the Mambo and the Quickstep.
Marie and Jonathan's Quickstep is first, and is to "Good Morning." Jonathan is wearing a light gray tux with a white shirt. Marie is in a long, flowing, light blue evening gown. The top has spaghetti straps and is fitted, and the skirt is full, but has high slits. The dress also has a back piece which I'll call a train, and the train is attached to Marie's wrists so that it flies around as she dances. It's actually more like a cape, because it's attached to the dress higher than a train would be.
Jonathan had mentioned that he was adding as much technical content as possible, since that's what the judges criticized them about last week. I have a hard time concentrating on Marie's feet, because her dress is flying all over the place. They do the expected quick jumps and hops, and the sliding around the floor in the ballroom hold. They also do a fun spin at the end where Marie ends up lying on the floor spinning around.
Len tells Marie and Jonathan that Marie brings joy and entertainment to the show, and she's the most entertaining of all the celebrities. He says he thought their dance was perfect! Bruno says there was plenty of content with all the classic Quickstep moves. Carrie Ann says she was surprised that they chose to do this dance, because their last Quickstep was so good. She says they did up their content, it was completely different from their last Quickstep, and Marie didn't miss one step.
Carrie Ann and Bruno give Marie and Jonathan's Quickstep scores of perfect ten, and Len gives them a nine, for a total of 29 out of 30!
Next up are Mel and Maks. This week, they're tackling the Paso Doble and the Viennese Waltz. It's a risky move, because their last Paso Doble earned them a perfect score of 30 from the judges. Mel says she chose to do the Viennese Waltz again because she thinks she can do it better than last time.
Mel and Maks' Viennese Waltz is to "Somebody to Love." They're both dressed all in bright white. Mel's white dress is tight on top and long and flowing on the bottom. The top has a low neck, but there are about a dozen sparkling necklaces built into the dress that almost look like a high neck. The dress is sleeveless and backless, and shows off how much she's toned up since the beginning of the show.
This Viennese Waltz looks.....
