Dancing With The Stars: Misty Is Out - Does Someone Go Home Tonight?
Episode 5 Recap by Jenny Lane
October 1, 2008
Last week on Dancing with the Stars, the 11 remaining couples had just a few days to learn their new dance, compared to the weeks that they had to learn the first two dances. They all tackled either the Rumba or the Paso Doble. The father/son rivalry between Corky and Mark came to an end, but not because we lost Cloris and Corky. Instead, it was Kim and Mark that went home, proving once again what I suspected, Cloris’ fans are a force to be reckoned with.

Tonight, the ten couples are tackling the Jive or the Viennese Waltz. But before we even get to the competition, Tom reveals that we’ve got some drama to investigate. Apparently Misty May sustained a “terrible injury” on Friday. We see a clip of her rehearsing the jive, and then falling as she does some of the quick hop/jumps. Tom says “tonight she reveals the true extent” of the injury.

Before we get to the introductions, I feel the need to comment on Samantha. Her hair is inexplicable…and truly looks like she stuck her finger in a light socket. If you saw the episode of ‘Friends’ where they went to Barbados, you’ll remember what Monica’s hair looked like, and that’s what Samantha’s hair looks like tonight! The other comment is that she’s wearing a strapless red evening gown, and I’m not sure if it’s what she’s wearing under her dress, or if maybe she has stopped breastfeeding, but she looks like she has shrunk at least two cup sizes since last week!

Now, on to the show. Misty May is notably absent as the couples are introduced. Tom says that she will join us later in the show to discuss the injury and how it will affect her future with the show. As the couples enter the studio and line up, I see that Cloris is dressed in what is, without a doubt, a jive costume. As I anticipate and ponder Cloris’ execution of the fastest dance, I am both fearful for her and for me.

First on the floor are Susan and Tony, dancing the Jive. Susan second guesses herself in rehearsals, and Tony says her biggest challenge is to trust her instincts. To help her out, he takes her on a field trip to Radio City. There, they work with the Rockettes, who give Susan some pointers on her ‘kicks and flicks.’

We can expect to see a lot of retro costuming tonight for the jive. Tony is wearing black pants, a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a black skinny tie, and a black sequined vest. Susan is wearing a black and white dress. The length is above the knee by a few inches, but not at all short by this show’s standards. The skirt is full and has layers and layers of black tulle underneath the white layer. The top is very low cut, very sleek, and very tight. Susan is a very thin woman, and that makes her boobs look even huger than they probably are, as they spill out over the top of her dress. The dress also has a black sequined band around the waist, and small black dots all over it.

Susan and Tony’s jive unfortunately looks awkward. Despite the fact that the Rockettes advised Susan to just enjoy herself, she doesn’t seem to be. It might be that her perfectionism is preventing her from loosening up and having fun with things. Her kicks are much lower than Tony’s, and her smile looks very pasted on. Tony’s kicks are big and bouncy and free, while Susan’s are choppy and clunky and forced.

Before Susan and Tony face the judges’ comments, Tom notes that Susan has an ace bandage around her left ankle. As she stands there, she looks like she’s putting all of her weight on the other leg, so maybe that played a part in her performance.

Len says that an ankle injury doesn’t surprise him, because this show is “the toughest test in television, week after week to come out and do a new routine.” He says that Susan has “kept a constant standard throughout.” Bruno says that Susan’s foot was “a bit unsteady, and the injury showed in the steps.” Carrie Ann says she disagrees with Bruno, and she actually didn’t notice that Susan had an injury. However, she thinks that Susan’s performance was occasionally “a bit timid.”

Carrie Ann is wearing a green strapless gown tonight, and her hair too is a bit bizarre. It’s curled in kind of a retro style, and pinned up to make it look naturally shorter than it is.
