Dancing With The Stars: Rocco Saved By Misty-May's Injury
Episode 7 Recap by Jenny Lane
October 8, 2008
Previously on Dancing with the Stars, Kim and Mark became the third couple to be sent home. This week, the real news was that Misty May suffered a torn Achilles tendon during rehearsals, and is out of the competition. She was scheduled to undergo surgery today, and swore that this injury would not impact her volleyball career.
With Misty and Maks out, the nine remaining couples danced the Jive or the Viennese Waltz. Brooke got this season’s first score of ten, Cloris was extra wacky, Warren was light on his feet, Lance finally tried to be traditional, Toni took costuming to the next level, and Cody played Julianne’s leg! Here’s how the judges scored the dances:
Brooke and Derek – Viennese Waltz - 28
Warren and Kym – Viennese Waltz – 25
Maurice and Cheryl – Jive - 24
Lance and Lacey – Viennese Waltz – 22
Toni and Alec – Viennese Waltz – 22
Susan and Tony – Jive – 21
Cody and Julianne – Jive – 21
Rocco and Karina – Viennese Waltz – 20
Cloris and Corky – Jive - 16
Tom and Samantha open tonight’s results show by telling us (again) that Misty is out of the competition. He says that she did have surgery today, and she’s doing well. That leads us into the recap of last night’s performances.
Samantha is wearing another strange hairstyle. Her hair is pulled back tightly and then piled up on top of her head in a chignon. That’s not the weird part though. The weird part is that there are also thick black braids running through and around and up and over, and if I’m not mistaken, Samantha’s hair isn’t black! She also looks like she’s been working out, her arms are super muscular, which I don’t remember them being last season.
The first performance of the evening is a tribute to Misty and Maks. Performing their Jive is Max, with Edyta dancing Misty’s part. I can’t imagine that Edyta is wearing the same costume that Misty was going to. Last night, Misty mentioned that she was excited, because she was going to be dancing in sneakers for the first time. Edyta has opted against the sneakers, in favor of low heeled, knee high white boots. Her costume is basically the stereotypical slutty schoolgirl outfit. Short plaid pleated skirt, tiny white shirt, and sequined bra underneath. The shirt is actually shorter than her bra, and barely makes it around the front at all.
As Edyta and Maks dance, I see that her boots aren’t really boots, but kind of leg warmers on top of high heeled shoes. Max, by the way, is wearing tight gray and white striped pants that are several inches too short. The pant length reveals that he’s wearing bright yellow socks, with white sneakers. He’s also got on a white shirt, yellow tie, and red suspenders.
Next, we review the pairs’ standings, and take yet another look at last night’s performances.
It’s time for a few results. The first two couples who are safe and returning next week are Brooke and Derek, and Cloris and Corky! Corky cheers, and Cloris looks happy, but surprised. This is the point that I start feeling a little bad for the couple that has to go home before Cloris and Corky do. She’s obviously got a lot of fans, which is the name of the game.
The next performance is by Kool and the Gang, who must be about senior citizens by now! They’re here to perform a medley of their hits. They’re here in “anticipation” (Tom’s word) of the premiere of ABC’s new show “Life on Mars.” What do Kool and the Gang have to do with Mars? Apparently the show is set in the 70’s, and so the medley is “in celebration of the 70’s.”
I have to say that Kool and the Gang look really good for their ages. They also still sound exactly the same. I’m not sure if they’re all the original members or not, but the sound is the same. They’re dressed mostly in white pants and white jackets, and a few of them have different colored jackets.
A couple comes out and does a disco-ish dance, but it’s not any of the professionals that are on the show. It’s a funny looking couple, because the guy is about a foot shorter than the girl (maybe more!). When he spins her under his arm, it looks like she has to bend her arm so that she can duck underneath his short arm. A few more couples come out, all dressed in fringe and gold, kind of like sluttier versions of the Solid Gold dancers.
The next clip is of the stars talking about how their other careers help their dancing. Warren says his football has taught him that he can put his feet anywhere and get out of it. Cloris says her “sense of play” helps her. Cody says playing the guitar has given him a sense of rhythm, which helps his dancing. Toni says her perfectionism and professionalism has helped her in the competition.
