DWTS: Technique And Respect Go Down The Toilet
Episode 18 Recap by Jenny Lane
November 18, 2008
Last week on Dancing with the Stars, the five couples all danced two dances – one ballroom and one Latin. To add to the challenge, the stars all had to incorporate 15 second solos into their Latin dances. The judges put Brooke and Derek at the top of the pack, but Warren and Kym trailed them by just one point. At the bottom, Cody and Edyta were tied for last place with Maurice and Cheryl. Lance and Lacey earned praise from the judges, and landed in the middle spot.

After the viewers voted, the two couples in jeopardy were Maurice and Cheryl, and Cody and Edyta. In the end, Maurice and Cheryl were the ones sent home. Julianne is back on her feet, so Cody will be back and will be dancing with her again this week.

Tonight, we’re already at the semi-final point of the competition! The couples will all dance two dances, and three of them will move on to next week’s finals. As the couples are introduced, we see that as expected, Julianne has returned. Samantha, wearing an emerald green gown tonight, tells us that the first dances will all be the one style that the couples still have not yet danced. The second dance is going to be a new dance to the show.

The first couple to dance tonight includes the only woman star left in the competition. Brooke and Derek are tackling the Jive and the Salsa, and the Jive is up first. Derek has a hard time choreographing the Salsa dance in rehearsals, since it’s not a dance that he’s used to. For the Jive, Derek is in a much better position, because he and Julianne did a Jive last week. Brooke says that this week, she’s going to concentrate on pulling the audience into her performance.

Derek is wearing a bright blue suit with a white shirt and a blue tie. His jacket is very long, almost as long as a tux with tails. His shoes look like they’re black and white, but they might be blue instead of black.

Brooke is wearing next to nothing, of course. From the back, it looks like a very short, sleeveless, backless dress that has loose, draped sides. The dress is blue, but the bottom is bright and the top is much lighter and more subdued. The whole dress is beaded, and the skirt is fringed. When we see the front of the dress, we see that it’s really just the short skirt and a sequined, beaded bra. The bra straps are clear, so from the back it looks like she’s not wearing anything in that area at all. The part that looked like loose fitting sides are actually what can only be described as wide, loose suspenders that flow and drape as Brooke moves. Since they’re so loose, that’s how they give the illusion of being an actual part of the dress from behind.

Brooke and Derek’s Jive is good, as expected, but not mind boggling. I actually think that they shouldn’t have done the clip about her wanting to draw the audience in, because now that part of it looks forced to me. It also seems like she loses her footing a few times, which might explain why the other things look unnatural and forced.

Len tells Brooke and Derek that the dance was a disaster, just when they should have danced a great dance for the semifinals. He says that they made several mistakes, and for once the other judges don’t jump in and disagree. Brooke and Derek smile and nod, and we only hear a tiny objection from the audience, which really says something.

Bruno says “the technique went down the toilet, usually you’re so precise, your leg was bent, your weight was always over the foot, I am totally shocked.” Carrie Ann sighs and says “oh Brooke, the fact that you went for a blatant illegal lift in the semifinals when you’re trying to prove to us that you deserve to be in the finals, I find that disrespectful.” I actually had forgotten that lifts aren’t legal, but leave it to Carrie Ann to remind me! She does add that she thinks Brooke is the most naturally gifted dancer of the group, but she’s upset that they went for the lift.

Backstage, Samantha has a chat with Brooke and Derek. Brooke says “what can I say, I made so many mistakes.” She says she missed her first step, and that got her flustered and she wasn’t able to recover.

Carrie Ann gives Brooke.....
