DWTS: Who Really Wears The Big Boy Pants?
Episode 19 Recap by Jenny Lane
November 19, 2008
Last week on Dancing with the Stars, the five couples each danced both one ballroom and one Latin dance. After the judges and viewers voted, the two couples in jeopardy were Maurice and Cheryl, and Cody and Edyta. In the end, Maurice and Cheryl were the ones sent home.
This week, Julianne returned to partner Cody in the semifinals. The four remaining couples were each faced with two new dances. Brooke and Derek had a tough first round, and Lance and Lacey had their best night ever. The combination of those two things resulted in a leaderboard that for once didn’t have Brooke and Derek at the top:
Lance and Lacey:
Mambo – 28
Jitterbug - 29
Total – 57
Brooke and Derek:
Jive – 21
Salsa – 28
Total – 49
Warren and Kym:
Mambo – 24
Jitterbug – 25
Total – 49
Cody and Julianne:
Paso Doble – 22
Salsa – 24
Total – 46
Tonight, I’ve decided to forego ABC’s one hour recap of last night’s show, and move right on to what they call the results show. Of course, the 62 minute results show is going to also spend at least 16 minutes recapping last night’s show. (I figure one 62 minute results show equals 16 minutes of recap, 19 minutes of commercials, 23 minutes of ‘special performances’ and other fillers, and 4 minutes of results.)
We get started with tonight’s results show with promises of the “most music packed show ever.” Even before introducing the couples, it’s time for the first musical performance. Rolling Stone magazine just named her the greatest singer of all time. Aretha Franklin is here to sing “Chain of Souls.” Dancing along with the Queen of Soul are four of the professional dancers. I refuse to say anything negative about Aretha, she’s earned the right to not be criticized. She sounds great, and I’ll leave it at that.
Next, it’s time for the recap of last night’s show. I was wrong, the recap only lasted five minutes! Maybe it’s because there’s so much more music than usual.
Speaking of music, the next performance is from singer Leona Lewis, here to sing “Bleeding Love.” Leona hasn’t earned the right to not be criticized, so I’ll go ahead and make fun of the short purple prom dress with the wide white belt that she’s wearing.
Aha, now it’s time for some more recapping of last night’s show. I guess I wasn’t that far after all, because now we take a look back at the leaderboard.
The judges now get to weigh in on what they think each of the semifinalists would bring to the finals. Len says Cody always gives one hundred percent, and has a great work ethic. Bruno says Lance brings great creativity, and is always full of content. Carrie Ann says nobody brings a house down like Warren, and he always gives the audience what they want. Back to Len, he says Brooke has great technique, and if she keeps focused, she’s the one to beat.
Back from commercial, it’s not time for results yet. Instead, it’s time for more music. It’s DWTS’ Julianne Hough, singing “My Hallelujah Song.” Three of the professionals are dancing while Julianne sings. I politely watch about six seconds, and then can’t bear any more. I do think she has an amazing advantage, being able to subject the entire DWTS audience to her music.
The show is half over already, and so far no results. Next, we get singer John Legend singing “Green Light.” Instead of dancers, John has a few dozen audience members jumping around and cheering for him on the floor. Oh wait, those aren’t audience members, those are his own dancers. Several of them jump on stage and start dancing. Then the ones on the floor run around and dance like something from ‘High School Musical.’
Samantha introduces the next clip, which shows how the show’s pressures impact the stars’ families. Warren’s mom says that he’s her baby, and seeing him makes her want to get on the dance floor with him. She says Warren has taken the show more seriously than she thought he would. Cody’s mom, dressed like Big Bird in a huge yellow turtleneck, giggles and says it’s amazing to see him dance. She says she flies in from Texas every week to watch him dance.
