Dancing With The Stars 7: Who Are This Season's Standouts?
Rankings by Melissa B.
As of October 2, 2008
When comparing this season to the past, I’m still not impressed. I feel that no one has truly stepped out of the gates and proved they are worthy of the mirror ball trophy. There are still quite a few dancers that could leave the competition without my being upset.

While I am disappointed with the level of competition among the stars, I am very impressed by the amazing choreography some of the professionals have brought this season. Memorable routines by Lacey, Kim, and Maks keep the show fresh.

I was happily surprised to see Pasha and Anya of So You Think You Can Dance dancing during the results show, and I hope this show proves to be a landing ground for more ballroom dancers from SYTYCD. Lacey’s brother, Benji, could be a great addition to next season as a professional.

This week’s show featured two very different dances, the paso doble and the rumba. I love the excitement of a good paso, but I’ve always found the rumba to be a difficult dance for the dancers to prove themselves on.

I hope everyone steps their game up and proves that this season is one step further for the show.

Here are my rankings for week two.

Warren Sapp
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 3
I am as surprised as the judges are that such a big man is so light on his feet. He will be helped by the voters for this memorable paso that Kym wonderfully choreographed. Even though he was a little sloppy when in hold, the straight line footwork was great and proved his feet are his strength. He moves as smoothly as Apolo or Helio did, despite their obvious physical differences. They are an entertaining, engaging couple and Warren is likable. Athletes traditionally dominate the competition, and Warren is looking like someone likely to make the finals and have a shot at the mirror ball.

Lance Bass
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 1

Brooke Burke
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 1
Brooke’s versatility continues to impress me. She has adapted well to all the styles, and she and Derek are a good partnership. I feel that she will continue to improve over the weeks, and she just might make it to the finals. This week’s paso was a difficult, fast routine, and Brooke proved herself capable of difficult choreography. Her arms are some of the best in the competition, and she even overcame dancing to the DeBeers diamond commercial song.

Cody Linley
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 6
Cody’s rumba was serious and mature. He has good lines and arms, and he is a good dancer. I disagree with Bruno and found him surprisingly controlled during this week’s performance. I actually think Cody could benefit from watching someone like Maks dance, so he could learn how to dance more masculine. I can’t wait to see this kid do a jive because I find him and Julianne so cute as a team. Do I see him winning the competition? Not necessarily, but he could easily make the final four.

Toni Braxton
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 5
Toni is a competent dancer who has proved herself versatile and classy. Toni’s rumba was smooth but unmemorable, and I think she needs a memorable dance to push herself to the top tier of dancers. If Lance and Lacey start dancing more traditionally, I think Toni will be pushed out of the top scorers. Toni needs to perform more to the audience, and when she does that she will bring more entertainment to her dancing.

Misty-May Treanor
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 4
Misty’ paso was domineering and intense, but it was also a bit stiff. She dances athletically, if not manly, and she needs to dance more ladylike. Misty gets so into the dance that she stumbled quite a few times. If she gains some control, Misty can prove herself, but at this point she is not one of my favorites. Maks is one of the most masculine dancers on the show, and I actually find them to dance too similarly for my taste. She needs to put strong volleyball player aside and focus on finding her inner dancer.

Susan Lucci
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 8
Susan’s personality is so likable, but her dancing will have to improve for her to compete. Tony’s choreography was unnaturally slow, and I think he might have done that so Susan could keep up. Her scores were surprisingly high, so she has judge support, but I don’t feel she has the dancing chops to match her charming personality. She is one of the most well known actresses in soap operas, which might help her, but she isn’t nearly as strong as Kelly Monaco or Cameron Mathison.

Maurice Green
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: 7
Maurice’s rumba didn’t play to his strengths at all. Even after all the work with the belly dancers, his hips didn’t improve. The dance was boring, and I continually found myself wondering why Cheryl was wearing such an awful dress that resembled a quilt. I don’t see Maurice lasting long, since Warren has already taken the spot as the best athlete competitor.

Rocco Dispirito
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: 9
Rocco’s rumba was as romantic as one of the dances between Jerry Springer and Kym. His dancing is awkward, and he seems very uncomfortable with performing for an audience. I would think it would be easy for any man to have chemistry with Karina, but their dancing seems destined to remain in the friend zone. The choreography was a little boring which didn’t help Rocco’s cause. I think Rocco is on the chopping block after this performance.

Chloris Leachman
Current Ranking: 10         Previous Ranking: 11
Cloris lost her only chance at remaining in the competition when she lost her zany humor. Her dancing is so stiff, and she barely moved throughout the routine. She is the worst technical dancer in the show, and her personality is the only way she’ll continue on.

Kim Kardashian
3rd Elimination
Kim was eliminated this week after failing to loosen up.

Ted McGinley
2nd Elimination

Jeffrey Ross
1st Elimination
