Not a popular road side
attraction.
Previously on ‘The Great American Road Trip’, seven families began their journey traveling in RVs across the United States down Route 66 on their quest to compete and win $100,000.
The Coote Family won the first King of the Road Challenge, while the Montgomery, the Faverey, and the Katzenberg Families were the bottom three families in the challenge, forcing them to compete in the End of the Road Challenge to see who would be the first family to go.
In the end, the Katzenberg Family were the first to be eliminated. Who will be the next to go?
The families all prepare their RVs to hit the road again, as they learn that their next stop will involve them trying some tasty frozen custard. Reno explains that just outside of St. Louis, the families will get a chance to try an ancient Route 66 tradition: frozen custard at a place called Ted Drewes.
Amy DiSalvatore tells her family that they should say goodbye to St. Louis, as she thinks it’s the last time they will see a big city for a while. Silvio disagrees, saying that they haven’t seen a big city since New York.
On the Pollard RV, Anslie tries to give her dad directions on how to get to Ted Drewes. Anslie explains to us how frustrated she is that her dad wasn’t listening to her directions. Anslie frustration is building, as Amie tries to figure out what Ron is doing.
Apparently, Ron went left when they should have went right. Anslie blames that on him, informing us that she does know how to give directions; she isn’t one year old. Amie gives Ron the same directions Anslie had already given him, prompting Anslie to say that she had already told him that 40 times. Ron says that he could have been wrong, and Amie says that is the first time in history that a Pollard admitted they could have been wrong.
As the families reach Ted Drewes, Erica Rico explains that it is the fiftieth anniversary of the ‘Concrete’ drink, a drink so thick that when you turn it upside down, it doesn’t fall out of the cup. Silvio says that it doesn’t take much for the Midwest to get excited. He is so obnoxious. Darius Jr. turns his upside down, but his falls out on the camera lens. Whoops!
The families learn that their next destination will take them spelunking. The Pollards don’t know what spelunking is, while the Favereys are excited to be going to caverns. Reno reveals that their next destination is the famous Meramec Caverns.
As the families near the caverns, Mason DiSalvatore decides to draw on Blake’s face while he is sleeping. Blake finally wakes up, not realizing that his brother marked his face to look like a cat. The ever subtle Amy is taking a photo of his face with her camera, but Blake only thought it was because he is so handsome. Someone takes after their dad’s ego. Blake finally notices his face when he goes to the bathroom, and Mason tells us that while Blake may have wanted to kill him, he knew he wouldn’t, because he would just beat him up.
The families reach Meramec Caverns, as Silvio states that this isn’t something you see in the New York area. Amie reads that they will have to watch out for several Jesse James impersonators in the cave, as it was a known hideout back in the day for Jesse James’ gang.
Amie says that after they all arrived at the caverns, they all went together on a tour to see the stalagmites and the stalactites. Everyone freaks out when a Jesse James impersonator comes out and fires some gunshots into the air. Amie tells us that it scared her to death.
Amie is excited about the fact that Jesse James once used these caverns to hide from “all of the people that was hunting his head.” The impersonator/tour guide tells everyone that the caverns were known as Salt Peter caves first. Ricardo is a huge history buff, so being there and being able to see these caves that were formed geologically was great for him.
The tour guide shows the group some stalagmites, while Ashley tactfully tells us that the caves were really cool, but they smelled like old people’s houses. Nice.
The families prepare to leave the grounds, but Darius decides that they should go fishing instead. As Darius teaches Tylier how to fish, he tells us that he went fishing when he was a little boy, but while his kids always wanted to go fishing, they had never been before. Darius thought that this road trip would be the perfect thing to bring his family together; they could do something they had never done before without any distractions. The whole family, especially Tylier, is excited when he catches a fish on his very first try. Darius thinks that it was pretty amazing.
Later, the families stick around the grounds, as Amie tells us that they are just winding down by the fire while the kids roast a few marshmallows, all before hitting the sack. Amie says that they need to go to bed, because you never know what’s coming up ahead on the ‘Great American Road Trip’.
