America's Got Talent: Terry's Got "Talent" - and a Million Dollars!
Epsiode 12 Recap and Commentary by Donna Emery
August 23, 2007
This week on America's Got Talent, four talented finalists entertained us one last time, and saw a dream come true for a very talented ventriloquist.
The show began with the usual pompous review by tiresome host Jerry Springer. He introduced the now-superfluous judges, and evoked a bit of sympathy for perennial grouch Piers Morgan when he told the audience that Piers had recently broken several ribs. He went on to re-introduce the Final Four contestants.
Then we got to suffer through the first of the show's contrived musical numbers: the "America's Got Talent Dancers" performing with the show's top 10 performers. It was mildly entertaining to see them all again, but most didn't really know the song very well and all of them looked stiff and uncomfortable.
Jerry revealed that each of the four finalists would perform a duet with a "special guest vocalist."
First came Butterscotch, who described her duet partner as a young artist who writes his own music. She said he has the number one musical hit this summer. She came onstage and introduced Sean Kingston. The two were a great match, and sang a song called "Beautiful Girl." His style is similar to hers, and he sang the song with her help beatboxing in time to his music.
After the song, Sean said Butterscotch had done well. She said it had been wonderful to sing with him. Jerry said that they had one more treat for Butterscotch: greetings from her grandma, who said that Butterscotch had been a star since she was two years old. She sent her love to Butterscotch, and the singer teared up with emotion.
The next duet featured Terry Fator. He said that only one name had stood out in his mind, when he thought about who he wanted to sing with.
Terry came onstage - which was a woodsy scene - with his tuxedo-ed puppet, and introduced Kermit the Frog. The audience was amused and entertained to see the famous frog sitting on a hay bale. Terry came up with a great imitation of James Taylor, singing "You've Got a Friend." Kermit and "James" traded portions of the song, and the ending was great as the Muppets' Chickens joined in the chorus.
The audience loved the performance. Kermit said he hoped that they had, since the chickens had "worked their tailfeathers off." Jerry wondered how the judges felt about the performance, but instead of the usual arguing triad, the "judges" were now Muppet characters Animal, Beaker and the Swedish Chef. Jerry said that he had one final message for Terry, and Miss Piggy came on to wish him the best of luck. She ended by saying that if he won the million, he should call her. Terry joked to Kermit that he promised not to steal his girlfriend.
The scene shifted to ingénue charm with Julienne Irwin. She said her duet partner was a new female vocalist, who'd recently been hailed as a country star. Julienne was amazed.
Julienne began her number by singing in a rose-covered swing. She soon introduced her partner, Taylor Swift. They sang a song that I didn't recognize. Although Julienne sounded nice, I wasn't that impressed with her or her partner. After the performance, Jerry brought Julienne a greeting from Martina McBride. Martina said she is impressed by Julienne, and that she'd brought back memories of her own journey to stardom.
