Hell's Kitchen - Quiet Time With Chef Ramsay
Recap by Brian Sikorsky
June 7, 2007
When Chef Ramsay reviles Jen's dish, she started to feel flush and struggled to approach him. He says that her vanilla crepe with caramelized peaches had too much peach schnapps and he felt drunk.
Melissa served a pepper-crusted steak with roasted asparagus. Of course with what I said earlier about Gordon's preferences for simple food, I assumed he would love this. I was right. He said it was simple and cooked perfectly. See? I was right. Sign me up for next season.
Julia, who happens to be a short order cook at the Waffle House is next with her chicken fired chicken penne. She is joined with Tiffany and her seafood tostada. They taste each other's food and Tiffany says that Julia's pasta is too peppery. Gordon agrees but adds that the chicken was cooked perfectly. Julia enjoys the tostada and when Gordon asks if she would order it in a restaurant, she says yes and Chef Ramsay agrees.
Last but not least is Aaron; the heavy set 48 year-old wearing a cowboy hat. Gordon asks him where his horse is and says he has never met an Asian cowboy. Chef Ramsay says, "You are a chunky monkey" to which Aaron responds, "Yes chef". He delivers a plate of "finger foods" which makes Gordon ask, "How big are your fingers?" He recommends that he only needs a small amount of food and to get rid of the extras.
Chef Ramsay then tells the group that they will be divided into teams by sex with the blue team being made up of the men and the women on the red team.
Gordon says that Hell's Kitchen will open tomorrow for dinner and tells them to get some rest because they will have a busy day tomorrow.
In the dorms, the chefs start bonding. The women agree to hold themselves close and not backstab until later.
The next morning, Brad takes lead in the blue kitchen while in the red kitchen, Julia is asking questions that nobody is answering. Aaron is struggling to make his ice cream base and is receiving help from the rest of the team while Joanna is taking control of the red team and arguing with everyone.
With Hell's Kitchen about to open, Gordon Ramsay asks Julia how the red kitchen is doing. She tells him that there is a lack of communication. He asks Aaron how the blue team is and he breaks down into tears. Gordon Ramsay coaches him and tells him he can do it. With the teams as ready as they can be, Chef Ramsay opens the doors.
The guests pile into the restaurant and the teams prepare for the rush. The first order is sent to the kitchen for the red team. The first item is for quail eggs which Tiffany over cooks. Julia the short order cook offers to help but is pushed away to cut apples. Vinnie overcooks a pasta appetizer for the blue kitchen, which causes him to laugh as Gordon is yelling at him. In an interview, Vinnie says that he can't help when Chef Ramsay uses a word he doesn't understand, like "rubbish". That's right folks; Vinnie doesn't know the word rubbish. He is the weakest link. Goodbye.
As more trouble is plaguing the red team and they continue to struggle to get the quail eggs out of the kitchen, Julia is standing in the back making comments as she is peeling apples.
Back in the blue kitchen, Vinnie's troubles are not going away. When he runs out of vegetable stock he begins to use plain water in the risotto. He justifies his decision by saying that stock is mostly water and vegetables are mostly water. Chef Ramsay goes nuts and kicks him to the dishwasher station and moves Brad to the appetizer station.
After watching her fellow red team member's struggle making the fried eggs, she again attempts to move in and help. She is pushed aside and starts to cry. Gordon notices and tries to talk to her. She tells him that she has been trying to help her team but she isn't being allowed to. Chef Ramsay moves her to make the quail eggs and kicks Tiffany aside. He assigns Melissa to run the kitchen and with those orders, she starts to get food out of the kitchen. Joanna starts fighting with Melissa over spaghetti, which later gets returned to the kitchen for being over cooked.
In the blue kitchen, Aaron is having a hard time and starts feeling dizzy. We see Aaron tell his teammates that his walking off the line and will be back in five minutes. What we don't see is Gordon going to Aaron and asking if he's okay. When Aaron tells Chef Ramsay that he's feeling dizzy, it is Gordon that tells him to go outside for five minutes and get some fresh air. You can see this cut out clip on the FOX website for "Hell's Kitchen". The missing clip changes the tone of the scene and shows that Chef Ramsay is not as much of a scary jerk that they make him out to be.
With the blue team running out of food and the red team struggling to get organized, Chef Ramsay decides to shutdown the restaurant. Melissa is chosen as the best of the worst on the read side and is asked to nominate two people for elimination.
In the dorms, Melissa speaks with each of the red team members and tells Tiffany that "[She's] not going home".
Back in front of Chef Ramsay, Melissa nominates Joanna for her attitude during service and Tiffany for not being able to get the appetizers out. Gordon decides that it was Tiffany that deserved most to go home and was sent packing.
