Hell's Kitchen - Pinching Lobsters And Raging Tempers
Episode 6 Recap by Brian Sikorsky
July 10, 2007
This week in "Hell's Kitchen" lobsters pinch and tempers fly. We start off by hearing that the red team is happy about Melissa being taken off their team and moved to the blue side. In the dorms, Melissa is trying to save face by pledging her alliance to the blue team but Rock doesn't want to hear it. He says he just wants to reflect on winning. Bonnie walks by Melissa and Jen and makes and announcement that there is going to be a meeting in Jen's room and turns to Melissa and says, "Not you bitch."
The next morning they meet up with Chef Ramsay in Hell's Kitchen. He is standing beside a large covered object. Gordon tells them that today's assignment is to create a creative dish using lobster. He removes the cover to show a large tank filled with fresh live lobsters. Bonnie doesn't look happy and Gordon calls her out. She tells the chef that she hates killing lobsters. She says she cries every time. I'm not even going to say anything. Okay, yes I am. She says she doesn't want to be responsible for killing something but sweetheart, what do you think beef and chicken is? Yes you are not the one doing the actual killing but you buy the meat which means an animal must die. You may not be the actual executioner but you give the order. Don't get me wrong. The perfect idea of a meal to me is a big ol' steak or pork chop on the bone. As a chef she's going to have to know where her food comes from and how to prepare it. Kitchens don't always get their food in neat little sous-vide packages.
Bonnie is not alone in her concern. Julia doesn't think she has ever eaten one. Chef Ramsay tells Josh that since he couldn't correctly identify a lobster from a scallop a few weeks ago, he will be sitting out to give the teams an even number. He is told that he can advise but not touch. Chef Ramsay tells the chefs that they are going to have to collect their own lobsters (which are swimming free without rubber bands to prohibit pinching) and they will only have 1h hour to make 3 dishes.
When the clock starts, Bonnie is going the opposite direction to get a pan but Julia beats her to it and she has to go collect lobsters. Bonnie is whining and crying that she doesn't want to touch them. She faces her fear and does it without a problem. She throws the lobster in a pot with an apology and gets to cooking.
In the blue kitchen, Rock and Brad are working on their dishes while Josh is coaching Melissa. In the red kitchen, Julia is struggling since she has no idea about lobster. After 60 short minutes, the time is up and each of the chefs has to present their dishes.
First is Bonnie with a Grilled Lobster Salad that Chef Ramsay selects over Melissa and her Citrus Herb Salad with Poached Lobster. Gordon chooses Rock's Buttermilk Fried Lobster Tails over Julia's unimaginative Lobster Risotto. With the score tied it came down to two Lobster Bisques, Jen with a Lobster and Crab Bisque and Brad with a Lobster and Chantille Mushroom Bisque. Chef Ramsay struggles for a while over the winner but decides in the favor of the red team. The ladies (minus Melissa) are going to be featured in a photo shoot for InTouch magazine and will be taken to hair and makeup before the photo shoot. The blue team on the other hand will be working on the recycling for the restaurant. They will have to go through all the garbage in the restaurant and separate it for recycling. This doesn't sit well with Rock and he goes off. He starts slamming doors and throwing pots and pans, which alarms the rest of the team. In his one-on-one interview he was getting loud and mighty pissssssssssssss'd. While sorting through the garbage, Rock is told by Sous Chef Scott that he is needed at the photo shoot. He takes off his gloves and gets in the car and heads off.
