Hell's Kitchen - Jen Doesn't Have Crabs And Goes Home
Episode 9 Recap by Brian Sikorsky
August 3, 2007

This week on "Hell's Kitchen" I was left so angry that if next weeks finale doesn't go the way I expect it, I will never watch again. That's how serious I am. Take THAT to the bank! Anywho, the episode started with Rock and Jen making up and hugging out the issues that plagued the two of them last week. Bonnie is really upset about Julia's elimination and is also shocked that she's in the top three. Don't worry sweetie you're not alone. Jen and Bonnie realize that Rock wants to win and they realize that they have to beat him.

In the kitchen, Chef Ramsay tells them that he wants to introduce them to a very special guest, his mentor, and his mother. She presents he own Macaroni and Cheese, which Gordon says he grew up on and then presents his own version of her classic dish. He tells the chefs that their assignment is in one hour to take and American classic and evolve it to a level for fine dining in short, take it from homemade to gourmet. Each of the chefs pick up a dome cover and reveal their dish. Bonnie picks Franks & Beans, Jen picks Fried Chicken and Rock picks Spaghetti and Meatballs. Bonnie is acting stupid asking what franks and beans are curses in front of Gordon's mom, which Chef Ramsay doesn't exactly approve of.

After the hour, Bonnie presents an Italian-style franks & beans, Rock does a spaghetti trio and Jen does a chicken roulade. After they present their dishes and before the tasting can begin, Chef Ramsay tells them that he has some special judges. In comes each of the chefs' mothers. Naturally they all go crazy at the sign of a familiar face since they haven't had any contact with the outside world in ages. The mothers then have to taste each dish without knowing whose is who's and then choose their favorite. Each of the chefs are sweating in hopes that their mom chooses their own dish and not one of their competitors.

When the mothers made their decision, they all chose Jen's reinvented fried chicken and when she hears the news she lets out one of the ugliest cries ever. As a reward, she is given a day with her mom as well as Chef Ramsay and his "mum". The Bonnie and Rock on the other hand have to clean the dorms.

Gordon, Jen and their mom's go for lunch at the Lodge Steakhouse and where Chef Ramsay gives Jen $1,000 to go shopping with her mom at a restaurant supply store. Back in the dorms, Rock is laughing a Bonnie because she won't stop talking. Bonnie also tells Rock that she's only good at making beds and nothing else.

The next morning each of the three remaining chefs wake up and put their game faces on. Chef Ramsay tells them that during dinner service each of them will be taking a turn at the pass so he can better separate the cooks from the leaders. While each of the chefs are prepping he calls them over one at a time to practice taking control of the kitchen. Each of he chefs gets an opportunity to yell and scream at Gordon like he's been doing to them for the past few weeks.

Dinner starts and each of the chefs are in their own stations while Chef Ramsay gets them started. They are all hustling and communicating very well. Gordon then calls Jen to the pass first. Sous Chefs MaryAnn and Scott jump into the kitchen to fill positions while the chefs are taking Chef Ramsay's spot. Little do the chefs know but Gordon gave Scott instructions to screw up dishes to see if the chefs will catch them. Jen does a good job calling the orders but misses the fact that Scott didn't put crab in the crab spaghetti. She recovers and catches and overcooked risotto that was not a trick. She calls to Scott to find out how long on a dish and when he calls back a time she doesn't like she argues with him until he agreed to hurry up and get it out when she wants it.

It's Rock's turn next and he catches that monkfish mistake and blasts Scott for taking of the Parma Ham when he should know better. He is told that he is moving too slow but Rock says he's just trying to do it right.

When its Bonnie's turn it seems that she cannot focus. She is calling checks out incorrectly and stumbling over her words. She catches a pigeon that Scott sends her without a crispy skin and also Jen's risotto being overcooked. Jen then tells Chef Ramsay that she doesn't have enough risotto, which makes him a little more than upset.

Chef Ramsay takes control of the kitchen again and finishes the dinner. He says that it is the best service ever in Hell's Kitchen and that unfortunately one of them is going home. He instructs them to go back to the dorm and think about why they should stay. Bonnie's heart is not in it. She just seems scared. Jen talks about how much she wants it while Rock pulls himself aside and prays.

Back in front of Chef Ramsay, Bonnie says that every service she has improved and she is the kind of person that people look to for help. Uh, right. Next Jen says she lives for food and the kitchen is home to her, she loves learning and is confident in herself. Rock says he has grown as a cook and as a person and came here to win.

After a brief moment Gordon announces that Rock has got to go… to the final and the person leaving tonight is Jen. Say what?!?!? Jen gives her tearful goodbye as Chef Ramsay tells her to hold her head up high. Bonnie and Rock are the finalists and as a surprise, in walks Bonnie's parents and Rock's wife. With his wife in his arms he asks her "do you think they will give me a conjugal?" Bonnie tells her parents "I don't think I want to be a teacher anymore" which again tells me that her heart isn't in cooking. For one more final surprise, the curtain falls down the center of Hell's Kitchen to separate it like it has in the previous seasons.
