High School Musical: Who Will Get In The Picture
Recaps by Jenny Lane
August 1, 2008
Previously on High School Musical, we saw the east coast auditions. From the auditions, 30 hopefuls made it to the east coast semifinals. The semifinalists had to sing and dance their hearts out, and ten made it to the next stage. The ten then had to perform duets at Epcot Center. After the duets, the judges chose the six who would move on to the finals in Utah.

Tonight, it’s time to do it all again for the west coast auditions. But first, let’s refresh our memory and go over the host and judges (a.k.a. ‘faculty’).

Chris Prinzo – dance and vocal coach
Regina Williams – dance instructor
Jen Malenke – vocal coach
Rob Adler – acting coach
Montre Burton – performing arts instructor
Tiana Brown – dance instructor
Nick Lachey – host

The west coast auditions start off in Long Beach, California. Nick Lachey greets the thousands of screaming teenagers waiting to audition.

Up first is high school sophomore Hripsime Bagdasaryan. Jut in case the name doesn’t give it away, Hripsime is in fact a girl. She’s got long brown frizzy hair and what I would call an ordinary face (I know, I’m hateful). She’s auditioning for Chris, and declares that she’s here “to be a star.” She is proud to be a cheerleader, and demonstrates a few moves (more stripper than cheerleader) for Chris. Her song choice is odd, Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love.” Her voice is a little bluesy and she misses several notes completely. Chris tells her that she should “connect a little more to her material” and says that when she closes her eyes, it’s “a selfish part of performing.” Hripsime does not make it to the next round.

Ben Ashley, age 20, is auditioning for Jen. He’s a former soccer star and I must admit, quite the hunk. He looks quite a bit older than most of the kids auditioning. Jen asks him how long he has been singing and performing, and Ben’s reply is “um…four days?” He sings Gavin McGraw’s “I Don’t Wanna Be.” His voice isn’t terrible, but certainly not good. Jen apologizes and tells Ben he’s not making it to the next round.

Olivia Bonilla, is auditioning for Regina. Olivia is 16, and has a unique look, long brown hair and interesting features. She says she loves to sing, play guitar and write her own songs. Today she’s singing Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” When she’s done, Regina tells Olivia that the song was a little breathy, and she wanted it to be a little more exciting. It’s a no for Olivia, even though she’s certainly the best of the three we’ve seen so far.

Regina, Jen and Chris have also been traveling the west coast doing auditions on the road. Regina is in Hawaii auditioning Christina Brown, a girl who already performs in a local lounge. Regina walks in one of Christina’s performances, and coincidentally she’s singing a Disney song, “Colors of the Wind.” Christina is adorable, with huge brown eyes and a big white smile. Regina jumps onstage and tells Christina who she is, and tells her that she has made it to the semifinals. Christina starts crying like a Miss America contestant and gives Regina a big hug.

Chris is in Austin, auditioning two best friends, Sean Maddox and Kelli Schultz. He finds them singing karaoke, singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Sean is cute, in that Abercrombie wanna-be sort of way. Kellie is cute in a girl next door kind of way. Chris joins them onstage and tells them that they’re both going to the semifinals.

Jen is in the countryside of North Dakota, and she’s going to audition Cash Johnson. She goes to a roping competition, where Cash is singing “America the Beautiful.” Cash rides in on a horse, and his rendition of the song is, well, terrible. Jen confirms this and says “not everyone can move on, and Cash is one we had to leave behind.”

Back at the open call, things aren’t going well. Sarah Pardoe, age 16, hopes to change things. She tells Jen how she and her family just moved from Georgia, and she’s been working on her confidence. Sarah has short brown hair and, hmm, now I’m struggling to find anything else to say about her looks, so I guess I’ll just leave it at that. She sings “Reflection” and sounds super nervous. Jen tells Sarah that she’s “very raw” and needs more training, so she’s not moving on.

Stan Carrizosa is next up to audition for Jen. He tells Jen that he played football for two years, but now he’s focusing on his music. He’s singing “Tracks of my Tears.” Stan has super short dark hair and earrings in both ears, and a very cute smile. Jen tells him that he did a good job, but used riffing too much. Stan is moving on to the semifinals! He tells Jen that this was his first audition, so I guess beginner’s luck is on his side.

On the road, Chris is in Plano Texas, auditioning Madison Greer, age 16. She’s currently singing in a show with her high school, so Chris pops in to hear her solo. She’s onstage singing “One Night Only.” She’s very pretty, and looks like she’s maybe Jessica Alba’s younger cousin. Chris tells us that he thinks Madison has a great voice. He goes to her house, and tells her that she’s going to the semifinals.

Regina is on a little island.....
