Previously on High School Musical, we saw the east and west coast auditions and semifinals. From the semifinals emerged the 12 finalists. Tonight, those 12 HSM hopefuls will arrive on campus in Utah, where they will compete for the lead in the next HSM movie.
This week, host Nick Lachey tells us that first on the agenda is getting to know each of the kids a little better. T.J. Wilkins tells us that he’s not sure what his role on campus is yet, but he wants to be looked at as someone who is dependable.
Nick and the faculty join the students in the school auditorium. Nick introduces the faculty, and says that they will be evaluating the students to decide who moves on, and who “goes to the chorus.” Eventually, the grand prize money will get a single released on the Disney label, a talent deal, and a music video that will be shown during the ending credits of the next HSM.
Rob Adler starts things off with a game about first impressions. He invites James Wolpert to come onstage, and then one by one, the other kids have to give their first impressions of James (brutal). Briana Vega is first, and she laughs uncomfortably before saying “I see a laidback guy.” Christina Brown says “stylish and smart.” Isiah Smith says “Harry Potter.” Christie Brooke says “the deep thinker.” Shayna Goldstein says “chilled.”
Ether Saure says James looks “intelligent.” Bailey Purvis does not keep to the one or two word instructions, and says “I see intelligent too, and pretty eyes.” Stan Carrizosa says “calm and collected.” T.J. Wilkins says “a lot of confidence.” Anthony Acito gets a laugh out of the kids when he says “he looks like one of those artsy kids who sings and draws pictures.” Last but not least, Tierney Chamberlain calls James “the sensitive guy.”
Yikes, I hope I’m not going to have to sit through 12 of these. Rob asks James if he was surprised by any of the comments, and James says he was surprised by the “calm and collected” one. Rob says “it’s feedback, and what you do with it is up to you.”
James tells us that he’s “artsy and goes with the flow,” but he’s going to knock our socks off and leave a lasting impression.
Briana is up next. She says all 12 of the kids are very diverse and have their own style. Anthony’s first impression of her is “kablam!” Ether says “shy.” Shayna says “spontaneous.” Long-winded Bailey says “she has a real rocker style.” Tierney says “kind of intimidating.” T.J. says “a lot of attitude, you pack a powerful punch.”
Stan is next, and Christina says he’s “handsome and confident.” Tierney says “you’re definitely in that popular group.” Isiah says “you play football and always have a girl.” Anthony says “probably someone I’d give my lunch money to so that I don’t get hurt.” Shayna says “jock who has lots of girls that want you, but you don’t want any of them, you want a secret girl that no one knows about.”
James tells Stan “I think I would have to bring him an offering so that he doesn’t snap me in half.” T.J. says “you woo the ladies on the football field, but since you’re a performer, you can also woo them on the stage.”
Stan tells us that before he was a performer, he was a football player. He didn’t think that singing was his gift and didn’t want to be one. He thinks not looking like a typical singer gives him an edge, and then people are surprised when he sings.
Christie is up next for her first impressions. Christina says “I see a colorful, sweet girl.” Briana says “ball of energy kind of girl.” Anthony says “cute, cheerleader type.” Isiah says “dumb blonde.” When he says that, Christie’s everlasting smile fades, and a lot of the kids’ jaws drop.
Rob asks Christie if anything surprised her. She says “well, yes and no, the whole dumb blonde thing, it’s more that he said it that surprised me, but it’s not true.” Of course as she says it, she uses her best dumb blonde voice! Isiah tells us that he wanted to be as honest as possible so that the game would be a real game.
Isiah is up next, so Christie gets her chance to get back at him. She says “I see like kind of sporty, like you like to play basketball, like even though you’re kinda shorter, I see him as the guy who would like want it so badly, you’re like, I can do it!” Some of the kids laugh, and some look like they’re just uncomfortable witnessing Christie’s display of just plain trying too hard.
Briana tells Isiah that he looks like a “player.” Tierney says “the flirt.” Shayna says “ego.” Isiah tells us that people like to call him a ladies’ man, but really, he just has “a lot of girlfriends, friends that just happen to be girls.”
Ether is up next.....
