Previously on High School Musical, we saw the east and west coast auditions and semifinals. From the semifinals emerged the 12 finalists.
This week, the finalists arrived on campus in Utah, where they began the competition. They started off with a ‘first impression’ game led by Rob Adler, where the kids had to tell their first impressions of each other. Next, they met and sang for director/choreographer Kenny Ortega. Kenny then took them with him to the set of the latest HSM movie, and they all got to be extras in a movie scene. Finally, Regina Williams led them in a dance/exercise class.
As tonight’s episode begins, the kids file into homeroom and sit at desks. Nick Lachey comes in and tells them that “it’s time to get to work.” Today’s challenge is about letting go of worrying about what other people think about them. Nick tells them to follow him, because they’re going on a field trip.
The kids, Nick and faculty member Jen are standing inside of a K-Mart. (I like how the episode info called K-Mart a ‘department store.’) Jen tells the group that fear can hold you back as a performer and as a person, so hopefully today will let them go of some of those things.
Today’s challenge is to perform “We’re All In This Together” for unsuspecting customers in the store. Instantly, Anthony is worried because he only knows the words to the chorus! The catch is that they will be wearing earpieces, so only they will hear the music. The customers will just hear them singing at the top of their lungs.
The kids start dancing through the aisles and singing, as Jen and Nick watch from a monitor in another room. Tierney does a good job, and gets a guy to do a teensy tiny little dance with her. Anthony looks like a big goofy guy, bouncing around the store. Bailey looks like she’s performing onstage, but doesn’t really involve the customers. Christina can’t even find any customers, and is kind of quiet.
Stan finds a girl to sing to, who seems to enjoy it. Briana grabs a purse and a hat, and uses them as little props. Tierney moves on and finds a girl to dance with. Shayna is standing on the register and getting people up there to dance. Ether finally gets into it and starts dancing. James jumps on a bike and starts riding around the store. Everyone makes their way up to the front of the store and now it looks like some weird K-Mart commercial.
Nick and Jen congratulate them on a challenge well done. Ether says he had a good time. James says he realized that it’s ok to laugh at yourself if you mess up. Everyone heads out to go back to the school.
The kids are hanging out in the common room, getting to know each other better and eating some pizza. Shayna and Stan sit off to the side by themselves, and the rest of the group eyes them up to see what they’re up to. Shayna is definitely doing some flirting, and Stan if happy to be on the receiving end. The rest of the kids start yelling “Shayna and Stan sitting in a tree…”
Stan asks Shayna if she has a boyfriend, and she asks him if he’s hitting on her. Shayna says yes, she has a boyfriend, and they’ve been together for eleven months. Stan says he doesn’t want a girlfriend because “there’s no one out there that I’d want right now.”
The next day, the kids are back in homeroom. They’re talking about where they’re from, and laughing about each other’s accents. Nick comes in and they talk about yesterday’s challenge.
Nick says it’s time to pass out the songs that they’re going to sing for the faculty. But first, they get to get some “surprise gifts.” Faculty member Montre comes in to give the kids Verizon V-cast phones. Each week, the songs will be downloaded to the phones.
Anthony, Bailey and Christie are singing “There’s Always Someone Cooler than You.” Isiah, Stan and Tierney are singing “Unwritten.” Ether, James and Shayna are singing “The Remedy.” Briana, Christina and TJ are singing “The Man in the Mirror.”
They will be performing for the faculty onstage in a park set. Since the songs all have to do with something about letting go, they have to find a way to make their performance and the set convey letting go. After the performances, the faculty will evaluate them to decide who moves on, and who goes to the chorus.
During rehearsals, Ether’s group is getting along well. Ether is a little worried that James and Shayna are the leaders, and he’s not stepping it up enough.
Regina and Montre come.....
