Previously on High School Musical, the 12 finalists arrived at the HSM campus. For their first challenge, they had to run around a K-Mart and sing to innocent, unsuspecting customers. Stan and Shana became the first showmance, and Ether struggled to fit in.
The finalists got into groups of three and performed for the faculty. Tierney was declared the winner, and Christie and Briana found themselves on the bottom. Both Christie and Briana were eliminated from the competition and sent to the chorus.
Tonight’s episode begins with the kids talking in homeroom. Stan and Shana continue to flirt, despite the fact that Shayna has professed to have a boyfriend.
Nick enters the classroom and says they will be focusing on connections today, especially nonverbal connections. Briana and Christie are sent off to “chorus rehearsals” and the remaining ten follow Nick off campus.
The group ends up in what looks like a park area among office buildings, and Montre is going to lead the exercise. He says strong connections can be made using actions instead of words.
The kids have three tasks. First, they have to get a hug from a stranger, which is met with groans. Second, they have to get a stranger to look up in the sky. The final task is that they have to get a stranger to give them some of their food. Remember, the kids can’t talk, it has to all be body language.
Everyone runs off to get started on their weird tasks. Bailey snaps her fingers and points up at the sky, and the guy who sees her turns around and walks away, like she’s crazy. Christina picks little flowers and hands them out, which seems to work. Shayna is skipping and prancing around, and is pretty successful. Ether is parked on a bench looking awkward and doing a weird dancing pantomime thing.
Meanwhile, in chorus rehearsal, Rob is working with Briana and Christie. The two girls are doing an exercise where they’re pretending to have a tug of war using an imaginary rope.
At the park challenge, Bailey successfully gets food, and so does Isiah. Ether is still having trouble. Anthony isn’t doing all that well, but seems to have an easier time than Ether.
Montre announces that the challenge is over. He tells Bailey that she was “joyful in her approach.” Bailey says it was all about eye contact, and Montre agrees. Next, Montre tells Ether that he seemed to be struggling and taking too long. Ether says he had fun connecting to people for a long time. Montre says “well that’s good, but you have to remember the rules of the game, we wanted you to get in as many as possible.”
The whole group is in the common room, and the final ten tell the two from the chorus about their day. James gives Shayna a guitar lesson, which seems to irritate Anthony. He says he doesn’t “get Shayna” because she didn’t want to hang out with the whole group.
The next day, everyone is back in homeroom talking to each other. Nick comes in, gives James a hard time for chewing gum, and makes him spit it out. Briana and Christie are sent back out to the chorus. Nick tells the rest of the group that they’re singing duets. Here’s what everyone will be singing:
- Anthony and TJ - “I Don’t Wanna Be.”
- Shayna and Stan – “Austin”
- Christina and Isiah – “Boston”
- Ether and Tierney – “One Year Six Months”
- Bailey and James – “Bleeding Love”
Bailey says she’s excited to have James as her partner, but she was hurt when she saw that he didn’t look happy about it at all. Of course everyone gave a big “ooh” when they heard Shayna and Stan would be singing together.
In rehearsals, James is definitely acting cool towards Baily, who is trying hard to get him to warm up to her. She starts to cry and says she felt like he didn’t want to work with her. He says it wasn’t her, it was that he doesn’t like the song. Chris and Tiana come in and ask how things are going. The air is filled with tension, but they both say “fine.”
Christina and Isiah’s rehearsal has mixed results. Isiah says he’s worried, because he and Christina haven’t developed a connection yet. Jen and Regina come in to see how things are going. Regina tells them that they’re two people who have broken up, so they have to have a connection. She has them stand back to back and speak the words rather than sing them. Christina says she’s nervous, because she has a problem connecting with Isiah.
Regina and Chris are helping out in Anthony and TJ’s rehearsal. Anthony says he enjoys the song and is excited about it. After the faculty members leave, TJ and Anthony sit down and talk.
TJ asks Anthony how.....
