Kid Nation: Beans, Pigs, Poo, And Taylor Too
Commentary by Cindy Rutolo Dietrich
October 26, 2007
I already know who's gonna, or should win the "Baddest Bitch Award" on
next year on Fox's Reality Really Awards Show. Come on. Do I even have
to say it?
I don't think anyone will top ten year old Taylor's attitude. I also
think it's going to get her famous. She's a powerfully polarizing
figure. Hmm. Reminds me of someone I know from Big Brother.
That reminds me, CBS has found an interesting way to promote Kid Nation.
Forget about adults. They're after the kid vote. They open with a little
cartoon commercial that tells kids, "you have the power to tell
everyone to watch. Grab your parents. Pick up the remote. and click onto
kid nation." It's subversively clever.
The two new Town Council (TC) members, 11 year old Guylan, and 10 year
old Zack, jumped into their new roles with gusto. Green District TC
leader, Laurel tells them to get used to waking up at the crack of dawn
so they can wake up the rest of the town. They do so with a loud
clanging bell.
"You're not the boss of me!"
Former yellow district TC leader, Taylor, the little, hot headed, beauty
queen, just opens her mouth and screams when she hears the bell ring.
Then she rushes out to confront Zack. He's the new yellow district TC
leader. "Taylor's not taking losing very well. I don't think she ever
will." Zack says about that.
Taylor's buddies, Kelsey and Leila have her back. "Stop ringing the
Bell!" She screeches at Zack.
He takes it all in stride. He doesn't get ruffled. At least on the
outside. That makes Taylor go bonkers. She gets right up in his face. He
laughs.
Then, she acts her age.
"So far Colton hates you. All the girls hate you."
"Well, that's too bad," Zack says with a laugh.
"Um.. That's too bad, my butt." Taylor says.
That one cracks Laurel up. When they start to get petty and personal,
Laurel tells the three brats to go away. "Taylor's just jealous. Don't
pay any attention to her." She says reassuringly to Zack. "She's
humiliated, and embarrassed." She adds, hitting the bratty nail on its
head.
I wish they would feature some of the other kids. I wonder why they
haven't. There are at least twenty other kids in this town that we still
have not met. I would be disappointed if I was a parent watching at
home.
Meanwhile, things are a mess in Bonanza City. The camera zooms around
town focusing on the trash and garbage. The rats seem to be eating well.
It's only been two weeks. But, "This whole place is like a garbage
dump." DK says. "There's debris and spoiled food. It seems hazardous to
me." A lot of kids are concerned it may be dangerous to breathe. It
might attract coyotes and other wild animals too.
"Bonanza is disgusting." Sophia says.
No doubt the Pioneer Journal, the book the TC kids check for advice,
will have some words of wisdom about how to deal with this.
Zack was excited.....
