Kid Nation: Bonanza City's Going To Crash & Burn
Commentary by Cindy Rutolo Dietrich
November 23, 2007
You better watch out.
You better not shout.
You better not cry.
I'm telling you why.
Greg. Blaine and DK are running the town....

Oh yeah, and what a coup. The Town Council's overthrown. There's a new Sheriff in town, or two. No, make that three.

This episode picked up right where they left it. They had an immediate election. And Laurel's heart did get broken. She loved being a leader in Bonanza City. She felt that she'd done a good job as Town Council leader of her Green District. I felt so too. She still lost her seat. But she wasn't alone. All four town council leaders lost their positions.

The Town Council never could have imagined an outcome like this. The decision to listen to the Pioneer Journal's order to mix up the kids, would be the last one they'd make as TC leaders.

There's only one leader for each district. Both Greg and Blaine were in the same district. But the Town Council's decision to break those two up, made what happened next, possible. Blaine took Zack's seat as the Yellow District's, new Town Council leader. And Greg became the Blue District's new council leader.

For some kids, this outcome was a nightmare scenario. The two oldest boys, Greg and Blaine, the very same ones the TC purposely split up, took over those Town Council positions. Would they blow it?

Zack looked upset. It's hard to remember that he's only ten. But he reminds us when he says, "For a ten year old, I did a pretty good." There's no way he could have known how his decision to add Blaine to his yellow district, would come back to bite him in the butt.

For Blaine, it was a chance to shine. It was his time, to prove that he really was his own man. He said he felt he could do a better job at motivating the young and rebellious, yellow crew. Zack sure tried. They wouldn't listen to him. He's only ten. But he acts like a man. Blaine, we'd soon discover, just looks like one.

Michael said he just wanted a shot at running the Green District. Guylan handed DK an easy victory by asking the Red District to 'Please vote me off."

DK was all smiles; ear to ear. He seemed to welcome the opportunity to use his leadership skills. But Anjay took his loss hard. He seemed distraught. He really did try. But from the start, he was overruled by the older kids in his group. He was still gracious when he lost his Blue District seat to Greg.

Boy did they blow it.

For Greg, it was vengeance. Pure and simple. Anjay was a traitor. He traded away his best friend, Blaine. So Greg took Anjay's Town Council seat away.

Sophia looked like it was the end of the world when Greg and Blaine won. Mike said that it was a scary thought. And Laurel said, "Bonanza City's going to crash and burn."

She was pissed the more she thought about all the things that she'd miss. She no longer had a say. She no longer had power. But Guylan felt like a train had been lifted off his chest. Being a TC leader's a very stressful thing. The former TC leaders took their positions quite seriously. I thought that now, maybe they'd get to act like kids. That thought didn't last very long.

During their first impromptu, Town Council meeting, Blaine and Greg took DK's complaint, about a lack of respect, to an absurdly, illogical conclusion. They decided on a plan to teach the kids in town a lesson.

While the other TC leaders acted rationally, and wise, these guys were about to dictate and demand, absolute blind obedience.

They call the kids to the saloon.

The kids are told they must go, one by one, up on stage to say their name and age, and a little something about themselves. But, Greg warns, no one's allowed to make a sound while the person on stage is speaking. "If anyone talks, or giggles, everyone must start over from the beginning."

Blaine calls this a game; a communications game. It doesn't sound like fun or a game to me. DK says it's about respect. He felt they were doing the kids a favor by teaching them a lesson that should have learned in preschool.

Michael just lowered his eyes, and.....
