Kid Nation: The Root Of All Evil
Episode 7 Recap by Jenny Lane
November 1, 2007
Previously on Kid Nation, the newly elected councilmembers got settled into their new leadership roles. Laurel and Anjay remained on the council, and Guylan and Zach were the two new members. One of their first tasks was to deal with an ever increasingly impossible Taylor. She and Zach butted heads continuously, and she did everything she could to make his job difficult.

Several members from each district worked together to take care of the garbage that had been piling up in town. The council had assigned both Taylor and her friend Leila to garbage duty, but Taylor flatly refused to help. At first, Leila went along with Taylor, but later had a change of heart and helped.

Since the water tank in town was almost empty, the council decided that Taylor's punishment would be to haul water and fill the tank. Taylor quickly decided that hauling water was beneath her beauty queen status, and refused this assignment as well. The whole town worked together to fill the water tank, except for Taylor of course.

The showdown involved the kids fishing around in a tank full of sloppy baked beans and real live pigs. Their task was to find tin cans with their district's colors on them. Red found the most cans and became the new upper class. Green came in second and became the merchants, yellow went back to being the cooks, and blue the laborers.

The kids also earned a reward, and it was a choice between a huge supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, or dune buggies to play with. The council was split on their decision, but decided on the food. Taylor and Leila continued their pain in the ass attitude and refused to do dishes, even though it was their assigned job. Zach decided that they would not get paid if they refused to do their assigned tasks.

DK showed his leadership skills and refereed more than one argument among the kids. The negative attitudes started to wear on him, and he considered going home. At the next town meeting, Jonathan asked the kids if anyone wanted to go home. Even though Taylor had threatened and whined about going home, she didn't (much to my dismay). However, DK did raise his hand and said that he wanted to go home. Guylan took DK outside and convinced him to stick around. It was a good thing that he did, because DK was the winner of the gold star.

Tonight's episode begins on day 20. Divad has decided to open her own store/snack bar. Nothing costs more than ten cents, but even so, it's rubbing some people the wrong way. Sophia points out that she got a lot of the items from the kitchen, where the snacks would have been free, and now is selling them for a profit. Divad tries to defend herself by saying that she has prepared the snacks for people, but it really doesn't look like there was much preparation involved. Laurel says that she's a member of the red district, and since she's the upper class, she has no reason to make any more money.

Jared (who I still say is a little off his rocker) decides that Divad needs some competition, so he starts to open his own snack bar. A few friends of Divad give him a hard time and say he's just doing it because he's jealous. Jared gets irritated with the girls, and says "screw you" and walks away, giving up on the snack bar idea. Then he walks over to Divad's snack bar which is currently unattended, and knocks it over.

Jared knocking the snack bar over causes a stir among Divad and her friends. Divad actually takes it ok and reassures people that she's fine.

The town council goes to read the next journal entry. This time, they're told about "boom times" which was when someone struck gold. When this happened, the leaders decided how the gold would be divided among the town. The journal warns the council that sometimes, the rich just got richer and the poor just got poorer, which led to many people leaving town.

In the journal is a map.....
